I think the motor was moved forward in the 991 specifically to make room for an eventual Flat-8 (much shorter than inline-8 by the way), as well as hybrid gear in some models. It should only be several inches longer and not terribly more heavy. It would allow higher revs, displacement, power, and torque than the GT3's F-6, without resorting to turbos.
BTW, the 9A1 platform of the new DFI Flat-6 was specifically designed to be modular, allowing F-4, F-6, and F-8 configurations...

What's up fellas?
What's the scoop on the 991 RS?
So release date is March? What is the spec like? I am thinking of getting on the list for one.. no options in white to beat on track.
I am sure most of this info is found in the 101 pages of this thread.. but don't feel like spending a day combing through it all. Thank you!

The 991 has a longer wheelbase, extended by 100mm, 30mm at the front and 70mm at the rear. A new gearbox has been designed, lighter than the previous one by up to 5kg, but with the driveshaft location points located optimally for the car.
'We moved the engine because of the wheelbase,' says kristen. 'If you open the rear deck lid you think that we have a lowered engine, but that is because the body is a bit higher compared to the 997. Compared to the centre of the wheels, it may be 5 or 10mm that the engine moved, but this is because of the wheelbase extension."

The 991 current sports 3 different 3.8L motors making 400, 430, and 475hp. No need to be so pessimistic to think the detuned motor is the least of these (I'm personally told it's the middle one, but we'll see evenyually). "PDK-S only" is the worst of the rumors I've heard recently and likely a deal-killer for me :(

So I called a bunch of local dealers to get on list to build and order an RS... doesn't look too good fellas...A.) cars are at least 12 months away and B.) the dealers are doing 1 of 2 things.. 1.) compiling a list and offering those on the list to pay at least $30k or more above MSRP or 2.) not making a list, spec'ing the cars themselves and will sell above MSRP off the showroom floor. If anyone knows of a dealership willing to sell TWO RS' (1 for me and another for my brother-in-law) and allow build to order at MSRP, please let me know. I want a no-option car for track. Thank you!

A little taste of what to expect in the new RS vs 997 RS:
"The 991 is a completely different machine from the outgoing 997. Its longer wheelbase makes it much more stable mid corner and the wider tires help speed both in corner entry and exit. The engine is the same in both cars (you can barely feel the extra 10 HP of the newer model) but the much improved traction of the 991 allows you to get on the power sooner than the 997."
