After a question from 24Chromium on whether the old CL tool will work with the new mechanism - I put them side by side today to see how different they are. Here's a few pics said the two tools side by side. You can see there is a very different locking mechanism where the rubber gasket runs around the tool. I've also posted the new 991GT3 dust cap and locking pin 'wiggleator' tool side by side with my old trusty 997.2 GT3 duct taped flat head screw driver cap remover tool. Nice of Porsche to think of this neat new tool 4 years after the initial CL introduction. Looking at these tools side by side reminds of how different both cars are.... Ok, does the old 997 CL locking tool work in the 991? Yes, at least it locked in as it did on the old car and seemed pretty solidly connected. It isn't as easy to connect as the new tool, doesn't clip in so easily. I didn't put the torque "Spear" otherwise known as the 42" breaker bar on it, but it seemed to do its job. Didn't take a photo as there really isn't much to see other than its locked on, curious though the old and new locking tools have a different design when you look at where those locking washers are. Short of jacking the car up and taking a wheel off I'm afraid I can't be conclusive as to whether it would actually unlock the locking pin inside the CL mechanism. Feels like it should. When putting the dust cap back on it got tricky. For fours years and numerous wheel changes I've been used to lining up the plastic lip or flange from the dust cap with the locking nut 'hole' or groove. Tried that today and the dust cap just wouldn't smoothly clip in. Closer examination and you'll see a new flange which actually goes into a slot on the opposite side of the nut to where the hole is for the extractor tool. Once you see that, its a better mechanism all round as your old school screwdriver which was prone after a few wheel on off routines on the 997 to breaking off or wearing down the old dust cap flange. Those that have done this dance will know what I mean. The new design means the flange is opposite where the unclipping tool goes in so it should last a lot longer, good - I like it. Finally, the new dust cap and locking pin 'wiggleator' worked well at making sure the locking pin is firmly in place.

Brilliant, thank you!

Curious... what breaker bar are you using?

Excellent post I agree and thanks!

But why did Porsche create the problem in the first place...what were they thinking?

I use the precision instruments 3 piece :-

I think its this one, but definitely from precision, and its been great. I take the torque handle off when I want to unlock the wheel so's not to affect the sensing mechanism.

FLM, i just bought a second centerlock tool for my 997 GT3 from Sunset Porsche parts. When I got it I noticed it looked different and wondered what was up. I called Sunset. The guy that filled my order said it was the "workshop" version...about $75 cheaper than the version that came with my car. I tried it out and it works fine...anyway it looks just like the one that came with your 991. Thanks for posting.

Smart man to double up. I too did this. One on the torque wrench and one on the breaker bar. Also, a second set of nuts is essential if you change wheels at the track and value your time.

It is interesting that the design changed, but looks like it is forward and backwards compatible. Good news for anyone with a spare from the .2.

Amazing how much lighter the new one is from the old version though,

Thanks for the info!

Any idea if the internal threads are the same? In other words, will the 3R Racing removal guide fit? (the big red *****-looking thing)

Default Question about wheels

Hi, so I understand the new 991 Center lock System fit in the 997.2 wheels, so I can change the lock system, but recently I bought in e bay a Momo centerlock wheels, the advertising said the wheels was for the 991 GT3, the offset is ok for my 997.2 TurboS, so the question is the center hole is different in the 991 than 997.2?, or can I use the wheels of the 991 GT3 in my Turbo S 997.2?
please help me, I am a little confuse about that
thanks

The 991 dust cap tool is a pos....Porsche should be embarrassed to include that....

Made of Al or Ti would be much more in line with a GT car.....
