Default Driving in smoke conditions?

Finally took delivery of my GT Silver GT3 earlier this week and looking forward to putting some miles on it this weekend.

We're being hit hard by wildfires in California right now and even though I'm fairly far from the burn, the smoke conditions and air quality are pretty bad. I'm sure I'm just over-thinking this but is the air quality a detriment to our engines at all or will the air-filter take care of it?

I've never thought twice about driving in these conditions before but I'm being a bit sensitive right now and just want a gut-check before hitting the roads tomorrow.

I'm no expert but would assume the air filters will get dirtier faster the more you drive in those conditions....wouldn't think it would be detrimental

I'm in San Fran right now, woke up to what smelled like the entire hotel was on fire. I pray for everyone north of us, this is nuts we are 180 miles away.

I would leave it parked. Not only will air filters clog, but they are not 100% effective so some of the fine dust will get into the engine. Obviously there is an continuum of how much smoke.

Be more concerned about my lungs rather than my cars air intake

That's what filters are for. And know how to, and use, your rear fog light in those conditions.

Not worth it. Leave it in the garage and save yourself the hassle of smelling smoke in your new car over the next few months. Getting that nasty smell out of the cabin of a new car isn’t worth the lack of impulse control.

I think the Recirc button on the AC would keep the stink out pretty well...

Perhaps, but personally speaking, I would wait a couple days for everything to clear before finding out that recirc is not 100%. Smoke is like blood in your pee...it only take a fraction of a small amount to seem like the biblical Nile turning to blood. Even a small amount of smoke getting through and into the enclosed cabin will linger in the carpet and at the very least give the interior a musty smell. Idk...everyone has their tolerances for risk, and I'm generally risk averse for something that could easily be avoided.

Cheers!

To clarify, I'm not talking about driving through wildfires. I'm talking lingering smoke from 200 miles away. I think recirc will be enough to keep the cabin fresh but I was more concerned with particles getting into the engine during break-in. Lets see how conditions look tomorrow but I'm leaning towards giving it a go.

Let's use some data to solve this.
  • The EPA says today is Moderate for San Francisco, so 51-100 AQI. There are some bad spots in the bay area up to 153 AQI today.
  • Beijing is 21 AQI today but Shanghai is 154.
  • China is the largest market for Porsche worldwide.
So I think if the cars in China are ok, when subjected to day, weeks months of this kind of pollution then a handful of days in San Francisco with some smoke blowing in should be fine.

I drove my GT3 today in Marin -- it isn't really that bad out there. I wouldn't go to Chico, however....

Same here! I live in a high rise in San Fran and I could see the haze across the city from my window.

Omg really? Ok. I’m going to go do a canyon run in Malibu. That would be a problem right now.
Not a fire 200 MILES AWAY!?!?!
