Standard GT3 wheel finish. Chipped in several areas, getting worse. Only 500 non-track miles on car. Glaring white showing in chipped areas. Other than new wheels, any way to hide and halt the chipping and flaking?
Unfortunately this is normal, I have the gloss black variety and only 300 miles on mine and already have a couple nicks! I put a good sealant over mine in hope it will protect them! Oh well once they get bad I'll have em powder coated matte black like they should have come from the factory!
Macca posted a touch up paint color that works a while ago. I bought it and it works great. I'm at work now but will post it later, unless he does. Porsche does not have a touch up for the platinum wheel color but the one Macca found is almost identical.
My vote would be to take them to a reputable powder coating shop and have them powder coated. You'll never have to worry about it again unless you cause the chipping by curbing your wheel!
I think this is caused by Porsche continuing to push the wheels out to the furthest point (for styling and performance). Probably also why Porsche limits the factory spacer to 5mm on some models and wheel combos.
^^I'd also like to know the answer to Serge's question about warranty. It's a little surprising to me that such a common issue (even so early on) wasn't identified by Porsche QA during testing.
First of all, the big tires kick up a lot of stones. The wheel design with the square spokes versus the softer rounded edges of say a Carrera S wheel make them more prone as well.
Seeing so many chips this early on would indicate a paint adhesion issue. If you're seeing white underneath, there must be a primer coat. If the top coat isn't adhering to it very well, it could he causing premature chipping. There is no way with 500 miles the chipping should be happening.
