Boxster Spyder
Can someone tell me what the fascination is with the Boxster Spyder? I had mine for 3 years. I loved it. It is a great car. I just got a Boxster GTS which is better in every way, and probably more rare. There are at least 750 Boxster Spyders in North America. The GTS weighs the same, has more horsepower, X73 suspension, manual transmission, etc. It reminds me of the Ferrari fascination with the Daytona seats. I have a 360 with standard seats. The Daytona seat is the same as the standard seat with a different center insert, but a lot more money.

The Boxster Spyder top is just awesome to look at.
It makes the car an interesting Porsche and an instant classic.
If to have a 2 seat roadster in the garage for the next 5 years or so, this would be a good choice. It is exciting and different.
Of course a new 2015 Boxster GTS is a better all round car as it is totally redesigned, but it lacks the crazy style of the stretched cloth top spyder. (yes, even with the spyder top being a pain in the *** at times)
The speedster of the 1950's had a ****ty top, but in time, style trumped practical as seen in todays values of speedsters compared to the 1960's cabrios..
Hard to really compare the two different model generations... but when they build the new Spyder, the S and GTS will be once again in the shadows...
No mater how old a spyder becomes, it will always be a spyder. The S and GTS will just be old boxsters.

Great comment. The Spyder is unique and a straightforward throw back to the sports cars of the past. No electric suspension, simple top, actually lighter than the new Boxsters or even the Cayman R and just downright fun to drive. Nothing I drive, which includes a GT3 gets the attention my Spyder gets.
I truly believe, down the road it will attract the same attention and demand that the 356 Speedster now has.

There will always be cars that perform better with every future model but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are better. The new Corvette performs better than most of the current Porsche's but it's not something I want to buy.
As already noted, the Spyder has a very unique combination that really isn't duplicated by any other car. It is modern but it still has that Porsche analog feel and it is very much focused on the driving experience. No extra's, minimal buttons inside...nothing to clutter the experience just like the air cooled 911's. It is also reliable, very light (lighter than all current 981's) while maintaining good safety. How the weight is removed is also important, it's shaved from the top which lowers the COG.
Over the summer I owned a 69 911E and I loved the analog feel and overall experience but what was interesting was that I had a similar experience in the Spyder without all the fuss. I also preferred the exhaust note of the new engine. In the end I realized just how well the Spyder duplicated the air cooled experience with modern reliability.
The icing on the cake is the looks. I hadn't a clue about the Spyder until I saw one in person at a car show. Up until that point I really didn't have any burning desire to own a current generation Porsche and was more interested in the 993. Something about the Spyders looks reminded me of my childhood and love for the 89 Speedster. The overall package captivated me and ultimately started my research on the car. I'm not getting that vibe from any of the current Porsche's yet.

I don't actually own a Spyder, but I hope to soon.
I have been fascinated with the Spyder since it was announced, mostly because of what it represents. It was just a fun, back to basics car. I have always had a fascination with Porsche and Lotus, and I felt as if the Spyder had the best attributes from both manufacturers. It is elemental and modern, all at the same time...something we may not see again from any manufacturer.

Because one doesn't need to trash one model to feel better about a new purchase. The GTS is a great car. I had a E30 M3 which everyone thinks is the greatest M ever made and they would be wrong. But it was cool. I have a 993tt and every subsequent tt I have driven is a better tt but the 993 is cool. The Spyder is just cool.
Some people don't buy new Porsches. Period. Even if some models are special. They wait for such models to come on to the market at a nicely discounted price after the first owner has moved on to the next "best" toy.
Some cars just get under your skin and you love the fact that Porsche has actually made it. Spyder is one such car, that too when driven without any added doodads. It's a very individualistic, slightly illogical modern day roadster with a very focused appeal. One either gets it or does not.
