spin on oil filters- good/bad?
Wondering who has put one of the spin on oil filter adaptors on their cars?
and if so, how straightforward is the installation, I'm assuming you can do it with the car on ramps?,
and is this a recommended switch?
My understanding is that at one point, the feeling was that the spin on filters offer some advantages with respect to flow-through
Thanks!!

All of my Porsche's (old and currnet) had spin on filters. I cannot speak for the Boxster/Cayman's but I'm pretty sure they are spin on as well.
Or maybe I am misunderstanding your question....btw I've noticed the last 4 or 5 days have been quite, I think it is the holidays, typically these are pretty hopping forums.

If yes I have been using the LN adapter for the last year with out any problems ... the install seems straight forward as my tech installed it in a few minutes ... I think ramps should be fine as the filter location is accessable.
Given all the issues with these engines my tech recomended the upgrade along with the magnetic plug ... I also switched over to Motul Xcess motor oil and I change the oil after every HPDE weekend.
After 12 oil changes I have not found any debry in the oil or in the filter after it was opened for an inspection.
Hope this helps

I think the LN spin on filter adaptor is a pretty common change (most would say upgrade) that is done to the M96 and M97 engines used in Boxsters, Caymans, 996 and 997 Carreras.
You might search the 996 forum for people's opinions of this mod.
I have not personally changed to this yet, but I am considering it for both of my P-cars.

I have one -- but I'm not sure it's an upgrade....
I had bought it for a accusump. I ended up using the accusump in
a different car -- so I still have the adapter and the accusump tap.
Just picked up a Boxster for the track -- so might consider this -- but
I'm not sure how it would be considered an upgrade.
It's also a lot easier to inspect the canister of the OEM setup, just flip through the "pages".

Had the LN Spin-On Filter Adapter on my old 997S along w/ the magnetic drain plug. On my new 981S I put the magnetic drain plug in on the first oil change. I'm debating whether to put in the Spin-On Filter Adapter on my next oil change.

many of the cayman owners are prob over on the 987-981 forum...
Anyways, with sandwich plate adapter, your filter will have to be of smaller size. It's not necessarily a bad thing... the Honda Pilot has uses a tiny oil filter (similar size to oil filter for some riding lawn mower). LN suggests changing the smaller filter more often.
The nice thing about OE filter is you can inspect the filter media for any issues - as mentioned earlier.
