Default Edmunds Reliability Comment

Just starting my search for a 2009-2010 Boxster here in the PNW and found this comment regarding reliability for the 2009 MY. It does not carry-over to the 2010MY.

"An occasional problem on this vehicle is failure of the Water Pump and Thermostat O-Ring.

The cost to replace the Water Pump and Thermostat O-Ring is estimated at $353.00 for parts and $175.50 for labor".

Would I be wasting money if I replaced the water pump if I find a 2009 I like. Excellence magazine advises water pumps be replaced around 40k miles for these engines.

Any thoughts?

$175.50 to replace a water pump? seems too cheap unless it's super easy to replace pumps on these cars. Replace every 40k miles? Seems too short of an interval...

IMO, yes, a waste of money. It is true that many (NOT all) Porsches lose their water pumps around 60,000 miles but you'd be nowhere near that mark. The price you quoted seems a little on the light side as well.

About Excellence article's recommendation.... as much as I like and respect Excellence, I cannot comprehend recommending 40k intervals. Sure, we can replace engines every 50k, replace trans every 25k, replace tires every 5k, replace IMS bearing every 25k, but..... why??

Replace it if and when it fails. None of my Porsche water pumps have failed (yet).

Thanks for the replies. Having 2 model years ('09-'10) opens up more possibilities. If I can find a CPO car all the better.

extanker you are so right about dealer prices. Here near Seattle sitting down costs $150 for 30 minutes.

Does "extanker" have anything to do with KC135's?
