Default The problem with Porsches

I bought my first Porsche over forty years ago, and of course I loved that 911. My last 911 was a 993 which I purchased in 1995. The last Porsche that I purchased was a Boxster in 2007 which I still have.

So what's the problem with Porsches? They are so dam addictive. Over the years I've test driven Vettes, BMWs, Audis, and Jags just to try something different, but they all came up short when compared to the old Porsche that I was driving, and of course the idea when buying a new car is to hopefully take a step up and not down. So I guess it's Porsche forever for me. If I want a change of pace I drive my wife's S5 which is nice, but it doesn't handle like a Porsche.

Got the same problem here too! Ever since 1974 when I got my first, a 1974 914 2.0!

Add another to the list. Picked up my first Porsche 87 928 S4 about 7 years ago. 1.5 years later I traded up to a 90 928 GT which was an awesome machine. Had no intention of selling the GT as it was a rare example, well cared for and drove beautifully. But that didn't last when I laid eyes on a Spyder for the first time in 2010.

I can see the Spyder being a long term ownership for me. It would be cool to add another Boxster for track use!

Porsche's are definitely addictive and nothing else I've seen offers the experience, the looks, the reliability and affordability.

When I was 18 I was shopping for a Chevy Vega and test drove a 914 just for fun. The seller was in the passenger seat and when approaching a corner said "don't slow down, just turn". I did and was hooked for life. My 981 will be my 11th although I never did get a Vega.

Talk about a problem! I bought my first Porsche six months after graduating from college. I am now retired. Can you imagine the pain I've been through?

I only go back to 1985 with a 944, followed by an '89 944S2, '73 914, '98 Boxster, '00 Boxster S, '84 911, '04 GT3 and now '11 Boxster S.

So I guess I'm hooked, also.

It is a disease, an addiction and therapy is very very expensive. Bought my first Porsche in Sept '09. Since then I have bought three more and will add one
more by Sept of 2012. Talk about savings. What savings. They have all vanished.

It's good to read that there are others with the same addiction. I'll be checking out the 981 at a local dealer on June 28, and based on the pictures posted on this forum I'll be ordering one in late February to hopefully get the best price. Not too many guys are ordering Boxsters when there is snow on the ground.

I flirted with the idea of buying a 997S, but I've grown to love the handling of a mid-engined Boxster and of course there's the matter of the extra $50K that the 997S commands. I also test drove a Spyder which of course I love, but the hassel with the top makes it a tough sell for me. Otherwise it's the perfect car as far as I'm concerned. Contrary to what I've read, I found the Spyder to provide a fairly comfortable ride, espeially for a car designed primarily for the track.

So it will be a lightly optioned 981S for me. I guess I'm of the few who still loves a car for the driving experience it offers, rather than for all of the gadgets it has.

Add another one here too!

It all started with just a visit to a Porsche dealer to "look", one test drive later and I was "hooked".
I spent the next few years test driving 15 different cars/makes to see if I could find something cheaper that would imitate the feel and experience, but nothing even came close. It's a slippery slope...

Like they say, "there is no substitute"

Medtech - I see that you own a Spyder and live in California. After I test drove the Spyder, I told the slaesman that I would buy the Spyder in a hearbeat if I lived in a part of the country where it was warm throughout the year because I would keep the top off about 95% of the time. I've driven many sports cars over the past 40 years, but the Spyder is at the top of my list as a pure sports car.
