Thanks for the advice, guys. I havent arranged shipping yet, but should see the car within a week or so. I will post some comments after driving it. This is the only car I've ever bought prior to driving one. I guess that says a lot for the brand!

I came from a bulletproof E46 M3 as well. I daily drove it with Blizzaks in the winter. Sold it at 33K miles, but had no issues other than one stuck caliper which I fixed with a $25 rebuild kit. I loved it.
I am daily driving my Cayman S with Sach's coilovers and Michelin Alpin snows. I love it. Comfy and no problems at all.
Do it!

David,
congrats!
good luck keeping that black car clean!
have a 2010 Cayman (2.9) with over 40,000 miles on it
put over 50,000 miles on the 2007 Cayman S that I traded for the 2010 model
great cars for DD, plus fun on the track
and getting over 30+ mpg on highway with the 2.9 version
cheers,
Steve

I finally committed to a Porsche as a DD myself over a year ago. So far, the car has been a tank. My only issue has been battery drain... I now attach the bettery trickle-charger full time when in the garage.... No problems since.
Your "S" looks great! Enjoy it....

No, not even in Kali.
I wanted the mid-engine sportscar part, more than the convertible part. I've always burned too easily, even before losing too much hair. I mostly used the convertible on warm evenings. I won't miss replacing the plastic rear window every 3-4 years, either.
The Cayman has more storage and a stiffer chassis (stiff than my RS, even). So far (5,000 miles), I'm loving it.
I still miss the Boxster (it was great car), but it's really more because if the memories.

You get battery drain on a daily driven car?

Bill - what color configuration is your CR? I'm looking at well optioned Periodot Green. Very retro and looks like a blast. I've not driven one yet and this one is a good days drive away.

The 997 is a quirky car for a number of reasons:
1) The key has the "frunk" button located millimeters from the "lock/unlock" button. Many times, my frunk button is accidently pressed, which in turn leaves the light on in the frunk... One day later, the battery is dead.
2) If you leave a CD in the CD player, it will continue to play even after the CD player & car have been turned off. I have tested this, and it appears that the CD runs for another 30 minutes before turning off on its own.
The 964, 996 and older SC were not immune to battery issues. I keep all 3 911s on a trickly charger full-time. Cheap insurance.
I can't speak to the Cayman, but would assume that is suffers the same battery problems as the 911.

So far, the Cayman has been like our Boxsters.

After several drives in my new CS, I have a few observations. My very first impression was "this is no GT3 RS". While it is very responsive and handles beautifully, it is civilized and refined. Accelleration and power is respectable, but i see some power enhancing mods in my future. Steering response and balance is quite good, go kart like when compared to the E46 M3 that it replaces. The engine is so well balanced and smooth that I think I could convince someone that it is a prototype turbine powered car. At times, the sound reminds me of a commercial jet engine on cruise control. Nice and very cool sounding. I have been a little surprised by the tight spread on the gear ratios. It seems like I noticed a casual shift from 2nd to 3rd gear and the rpms only dropped maybe 300 rpm. I am also surprised that 6th gear isn't an overdrive, 3050 rpm at 75 mph. Fuel economy is looking like it will average between 21 and 22 mpg. My commute is a mix of interstate and surface streets.
