Smile A Tribute to the Boxster

ALL,

I'm just back from 3 days at Watkins Glen with my '11 Boxster S. I've had it 3 months -- I ordered it with the track seats, PASM and Limited slip diff. [I installed ATE brake fluid and Pagid RS14 pads.]

This car is great on the track!!! (And of course it's lovely on the street.) The handling is so neutral that it just goes where you want -- its very smooth and completely predictable. I sold my '04 GT3 in order to get the Boxster and I don't regret the 'downgrade' at all. I don't even miss the extra 70hp -- I passed plenty of GT3 and even Ferrari F355 Challenge Cup cars. (On more than 1 session I forgot to push the Sport/PASM button -- even then it was terrific.)

It's also my street car -- I drove it to the track, put on the track tires (I have a little tire trailer I tow behind the Boxster), the magnetic numbers and off I went.

A Great Car !!

I'm also impress with the Boxster after a long weekend at the track (Roebling, GA). No disappointment, the
handling was superb!

How did you hook-up the trailer behind the Boxster and who has them for purchasing?

re trailer hitch -- willwoodsystem.com -- they make an excellent hidden-hitch. The hardware fits in behind the license plate and is invisible until you insert the hitch-ball. [I am merely a happy customer, not affiliated with them in any way]

The Boxster is a perfect platform IMHO. It is the first car I've driven that actually translates even the smallest steering input into an equal input at the wheels. In other words it's the first car that handles corners without compromise. It's really weird after all these years to have a car that performs as would be expected, especially after training my brain that it's not possible.

I can't imagine what a set of racing slicks would be like, the car is already glued to the road with the RE050A's!

fhp911.. any overheating issues? I know you were quite angry due to heating issues at NJMP recently but hear you are nothing but praise.. what gives ?

Glad to hear you enjoyed your car more. I too have become a big fan of simple "arrive and drive" DE approach. No trailers, campers, SUVs etc. Enjoy driving your Porsche for all aspects of the trip

Default Need track tire recommendations?

Looking for a great value tire recommendation for track tires. These tires should get me to the track normally 2-4hrs away and get me back home safely after a 2-day track event. I purchased wheels and now need the tire recommendation for Size 205/55-17 (Front), 235/50-17 (Rear)?

Thanks!

Indeed, good story especially coming from an ex-GT3 owner. I just bought a Cayman, which replaced my 996. The laws of physics can not be defied i.e. rear engine versus mid-engine.

racer asked in a post about my overheating issues and why I praised the Boxster in spite of the overheating.

YES -- at a 103+ degree day at Lime Rock the car overheated repeatedly and I had to park it 10 minutes into 3 sessions, which was a bummer. I've concluded after reading many people's entries that the Boxster family (Boxster + Cayman) do suffer in extreme heat. The fix seems to be the addition of the 3rd radiator which is standard on PDK cars. (At least it is standard on the 300+ hp cars, as I understand it.) Cost for this approx $1K. [note: the car was fine on other occasions into the low 90s.]

I must say that the overheating issue was not on my mind when I wrote the tribute to the Boxster based on my time at Watkins Glen last week. [The high was 80 degrees.] So a more thorough one would have mentioned this truly important Achilles Heel.

final word: If you track your Boxster-family car and it gets into the high 90s or more, install the 3rd radiator. I'll be doing it over the winter.
