Default Another Croc gets Shark-Werked into an RS350 & HRE Wheels

This arctic silver 07 Cayman S came into us bone stock for a full-course of the SharkWerks RS350 kit, including the EVOMSit software, IPD Competition Plenum & Remus Exhaust. For the second course we also installed our Light Weight flywheel conversion along with a set of Bilstein PSS9s and a set of HRE Monoblok P40 wheels.

In she comes:

Here's the factory exhaust from underneath before being removed:

And off she comes!

The sub frame is out next in preparation for the transmission removal:

Here's the stock dual mass flywheel (weighing in at 29 pounds):

Shown installed with a new disc, pressure plate and our single mass (weighing 15 pounds):

The transmission and undercarriage is re-installed and in place of the factory exhaust a freer-flowing Remus system is added:

A sound clip of the Remus exhaust:

The engine cover is removed to gain access to the stock airbox, plenum and throttle body:

The IPD Plenum and larger throttle body (from the 997GT3) is now installed:

Over to the flashing station where we install our RS350 EVOMSit software calibrated for 91 octane and left-foot braking enabled:

The factory suspension is up next:

Off come the fronts:

In go the rear the Bilsteins and H&R sway bars lowered by 1.5 inches:

Lowered ride height result:

A set of 19 inch HRE P40s in satin charcoal is mounted:

Ready to go home now:

Wow, the HRE's make such a positive difference. I'm looking for an exhaust system, do you think the Remus would pass sound at Laguna?

Thanks Bensf.. well on a Boxster Spyder there's a local fellow that has a Tubi (which is louder) and he didn't have issues. Mind you that was before this weeks crazy clamp down event... I would imagine it would be fine since it is quieter than the Tubi.

LOL I know sorry! Actually the factory ones are very nice indeed and light too. The HRE's are only 2.5/3 pounds lighter per corner.

Those wheels are awesome and I am losing sleep over them. Plus my spyder is the same color combo as the one posted. I came close to getting a set for myself, as mentioned in another thread.

However, I dropped that idea after some research on wheel weights.

According to Only1buck, the OEM Spyder wheels are just under 22lbs and 24lbs.
http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-boxst...package-2.html

According to here, HRE P40 are 23.2lbs and 25lbs. Half inch wider.
http://mechdb.com/index.php/HRE_P40

And according to here, the lighter HRE P40S weights in at 20.4lbs and 23.8lbs. Inch and a half wider rears.
http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...san-diego.html

So sharster, how exactly are the HREs p40 2.5lbs and 3 lbs lighter? Or are those P40S? But still no 2.5-3lbs lighter. What sizes are they? Did you weigh them, or is that what HRE is saying?

Maybe Only1buck can chime in and verify the weight and source? I hope the OEM wheels are not much heavier than we think they are.

So if an aftermarket wheel company really kicked Porsche OEM's butt, then I am game, sign me up. Especially considering how awesome they look.

Sorry if this is poor forum etiquette. And I am not doubting HRE's quality. But if I was to plunge down 6 to 8 grand for a set of wheels, I'd like to get the facts straight and no propaganda.

Hey ClintonM3, first off please don't apologize for asking/verifying etc... this is what this place is for isn't it? I know exactly what you mean and why you're asking. In fact this is why we only carry HRE or Champion wheels. I don't want to diss other companies etc... but we've all seen them come and go and promise the world over the last few years. Both those companies are usually spot on but we still like to do our own fact checking and confirmation. Heck if nothing else it's always a little treat when saving weight here and there (in a geeky sort of way). Here's the sort of thing we do for example with the first set of R40 race wheels vs stock:
http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/techni...ok-wheels.html

And then a first set of centerlock P40's vs stock:
http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/997-gt...0c-wheels.html

And like I was saying in the post above not all Porsche wheels are heavy (most are) and in fact the Spyder wheels are some of the lightest yet. I'll try to confirm it later but according to our scale the stockers were more like 23.5 in front and 25 in the rear. And yes P40S' indeed sorry. Those are about 1.5 pounds on average lighter than the non S'.

Another example of a light weight wheel is on the Turbo S:
http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/997-tu...i-exhaust.html

The funny thing is though the entire centerlock assembly makes it be one pound heavier per corner vs the 5 lugger with the standard wheel lol! The HRE's we installed were marginally lighter (about 2 pounds in front and 3 in the rear). So all in all the days of the boat anchor stock wheels are hopefully numbered!

I would honestly say if you had a 996GT3 with stock wheels then a wheel like the R40 would give you significant savings vs stock. As far as getting an HRE wheel (P40S) to get weight savings vs the factory spyder wheel; well that would be a very expensive and minor difference that really wouldn't be worth it. For a second set for the track of course go for it... and yes they don't look half bad either.

Hope that explains stuff!
