Default the last word on mods and tunes

conflicted with advice on all sides, decided to call Sol Snyderman of Perfect Power in my area. Do not think he’s a sponsor here so just know that if you URL the obvious, you’ll get to his site. Sol has done some pretty amazing Porsche tricks over the years and offers services that render 4-digit HP for you TT power-aholics. But Sol is also a very straight guy. As an example, brought him my 993 TT looking for juice and he told me, “get a new TT, better in all respects”. Something about the 996 didn’t appeal to me but I got one of the very first 997 TT’s to get to the US, and boy was he right!

So, called him up to discuss Spyder mods. His advice was, “Porsche made a very special car in the Spyder. It is extremely well-balanced and great fun to drive. I suggest if you want a faster Boxster that you get an ’08 or later and I’ll strip it down and put in an X51. Don’t change anything in that car (Spyder), it’s very near-perfect”.

Paraphrasing for brevity, since we spoke of many things that might be done but rejected due to lack of significant power delta or endangering the special value of the car. As discussed before, Porsche did their homework here. Bottom line was to put in an exhaust if you want more sound, but not much more.

So, I think I’ll just leave it alone...the horror... the hor-ror...

It is difficult isn't it!!! That is what we get when we approach perfection...

His response is very much why I couldn't resist buying the car. Years ago I spent tons of money modifying cars to improve problems with handling, acceleration or sound quality. I learned quickly that modifications meant fewer people knew how to work on them and more problems to repair.

I started focusing on cars that offered everything I would want instead of modifying and realized that I would have to give up certain things. When I saw the Spyder for the first time I thought, wow that is a great looking car. Then I spent tons of time researching the mechanicals and realized that it seems to fit my description of a perfect car. Finally I test drove it and that sealed the deal. Great looks, good power, incredible (telepathic) handling and good build quality. Not much else I want in a sports car.

If I could change anything on the Spyder it would include the following:
- Lug Nuts - The crap they use now just doesn't look right. I'm going to splurge and buy Titanium lugs in the future
- Radio: Sound quality is average at best but tolerable. But the Spyders exhaust sounds so good that I find myself turning down or turning off the radio to listen to the engine.
- The alarm system/Key Fob - I wish Porsche included an audible chirp or noise that lets you know if the car is locked without having to stare at the headlights! What were they thinking.

hey Afshin,

nice avatar, your car looks great!

a week away from my build, agree about the lug nuts

radio? what's that, didn't check the box

the only other debate I had with myself was decal delete or not?
in the end decided to leave it on, can always remove it
but looking at everyone else's Spyder, seemed like the decal just belonged there

as for driving, still haven't driven one! anticipation!

That was my decision in the end. Exhaust only. The car is pretty much perfect 'as is'. I would consider the engine swap if I was out of warranty and the engine died. I only need 2 things at this point to make my car perfect

1) sport buckets
2) GT3 RS4.0 steering wheel

more power would be nice, but I am still within the break-in mileage, haven't step on it yet. It doesn't seem underpowered.

I'd like a heavier shifter, chunkier steering wheel, and a nicer dead pedal. I think a CGT birch wood shifter would be nice, going for that retro cool theme.

They should also make full ipod integration for non PCM. But not a big deal, I use the radio for background music for hwy driving.

I also think that Pilot Sp Cup should be standard in all light weight, R, RS, GT models.

There is no "last word", just preferences and opinions. I could never trade my highly modified 993TT for a newer Turbo! Also, other than a GT3 RS, I'd have a hard time keeping any Porsche stock. Right now a TPC turbo is looking like the last word on mods for my Cayman
