I don't mean to be a smart ***, but if it's that important wouldn't the dealer's service department be able to answer that? Or the independent you use - unless you DIY everything. Still any good shop should easily answer that question. All the best.

No worries, Fred. Water pumps can be replaced without dropping the engine (both earlier and later models).

OR, you can ask on rennlist and someone who knows can answer for you and others can learn from it since this is the place to share information. Do YOU know the answer to his question? I didn't.

Just to chime in- have recently had water pumps replaced in both a 986 Boxster S at approx. 65k and 987.2 Cayman R (DFI) at approx. 25k (under warranty). Neither required dropping motor. Both made clear noises, and Boxster had a slight coolant weep. I'm in the camp of listen look and smell for signs of failure, rather than replacing on a schedule.

Thanks, vet.
Good point - my bad - sorry and I didn't know the answer. And you're right this is the place to find answers and share.

Seems like it's not that bad a DIY project. I've done it in other cars but the Boxster you'd surely need jack stands or a lift. Good luck with the project if you undertake it.

I took it to my local dealer/shop who put it on the lift, and diagnosed it as a bearing was going bad. A new pump is warranty, so no big deal, but I thought I'd let you know I had an issue so other owners can keep a lookout/earout.
What was the mileage on your car? Mine started going bad around 44K

Follow-up to my previous post and questions. I decided to replace my 2010 Boxster's water pump treating it as preventative maintenance. I have the old pump and the bearings are starting to go. I'd not heard any noise when driving it. Thought I should add this to the discussion. My car has 55k miles on it. While there, the serpentine belt, fluid, and related were changed.

I hope you had the thermostat replaced as well while you were there?

So everyone mentions a specific noise when it comes to water pump failures... what does it sound like? Does anyone have a record by chance? I can hear a whine coming from my 987.2 while in lower gears, but cannot figure out what to check. Thanks in advance.

Pretty wild that Porsche with all their engineering prowess can't design a water pump to last much past 50k miles. The one in my Cayenne Turbo died at 52k miles and it appears I wasn't the only one when talking with other owners. My neighbor has a 911 and his water pump failed at 60k. Maybe I'm out of line for thinking water pumps should be good for 100k miles?
