Default A new Boxster S or...

A friend who did well last year has the chance to order/spec a Boxster S or he can hunt for a used C2/S Cab for the same money. Options on the Boxster S seem likely to be: LSD, windblocker, sports seats (or heated/vented std seats), bluetooth and iPod connect, dimming mirrors. I've not driven the 987.2 so have no idea whether this is now an equal or better option to a used C2/S Cab. What are the "pluses" and "minuses"?

IMHO - Boxster S handles better than the 911Cab. Gets better fuel economy. Less buffeting in the 987. 987 holds more hidden in the trunks but probably you can stuff a lot more behind the seats in the cab. The 911 will accelerate faster and will impress more people. Some people call the Boxster "the poor man's Porsche" or a girl's car so if that kind of status stuff is important the 911cab wins. The Boxster looks better. The 911 will holds its resale value better and will depreciate much less since its a used car to start - the original owner took the big depreciation hit for you.

Typically, ego will win trump all. The Boxster S is a fantastic car and every time I drive ours I'm more and more impressed. Enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the 997 GT3 or even my 09 C2S. By design, it's superior. Mid engine is the way to go. But, if your friend is like most, it will be very hard to pass up a 911. Then again, if he is like me, he might think "wait a second, the 911 is a coupe that the ripped the top off, added in structural steel, and put canvas on (where the Boxster is designed as a rag top). Only your friend can decide, but know the new 09 Boxster S is a very potent car and if both were taken on the track, I'd think the Boxster would turn the faster lap time.

Thanks. I understand the pressure and I'm sure he will do too. In part because of status but also because the used 911 has already taken a depreciation hit. I was impressed the last time I drove a Boxster S - handling is stellar.

back seats and the extra hp - if you need that 911, otherwise the 987 is amazing. it is sort of like a single seater small jet fighter!

The Boxster looks better.
:O I'm an *** man so I'd have to respectfully disagree!

The boxster is a a fine car but so is an S2000 for half the price. I'd probably take the boxster over a 996 but not a 993 or 997.

The Boxster S out handles the previous generation cab - not even a contest. Performance will be almost the same since the Boxster is lighter and has almost as much power as the previous generation S.

Lastly, the new DFI engine is not likely to suffer the IMS and RMS problems of the previous generation engines. I admit that said problems are a small percentage but I'm confident that Porsche has designed out the weak spots.

Just got a PDK S yesterday and it is outstanding! Pokes along when you do not need speed and gives NICE acceleration on demand. Would definitely vote for the Cayman convertible!
