Default 3.8 conversion

I am doing a little research for my dad (06 2.7). He is interested in a 3.8 transplant. If you had to ball park it, what you would come up with. I know you can get a 3.4 for around $6.5k-8k but I have no idea a 3.8 would cost. Also has anyone heard of a 3.8-15?

Thanks in advance,

Scott (and his dad)

I am guessing "many cubic dollars".

Try asking over on http://www.caymanclub.net/forums.php, a more active forum may garner more respones.

I was just drooling over Ruf's website. They only mention the 3.4 Cayman S when showing their supercharger and their 3.8 swap, and the prices are both "Call to ask"
http://www.rufautocentre.com/conversions/CaymanS.asp

By "3.8-1.5" do you mean 3.8 X51? That's an expensive factory option available for ordering on the 997 911S that bumps them to 380-ish horsepower from their normal 350-ish. Different intake, programming, etc.

There are a few tuners that offer this conversion as a package with installation. A couple that come to mind are Farnbacher Loles and Ruf. You might want to contact them for details. I don't know the exact cost, but I think we are talking in the vicinity of 30K for F-L and more than that for Ruf.

hope that helps,
Dave

I really like the idea of these conversions, I might even pay someone to drive one just to see what it's like.

I always felt my Boxster S needed more power and sometimes wish that my 997S had the engine right behind me...

Good luck.

Default Cayman 3.8 X-51

We do this conversion and source the 997 S 3.8 X-51 direct from Porsche Motorsports for 50% off the cost "new" from the dealer. The 3.8 X-51 new from the dealer is $34K, from us $18K. Install is approx. 40-50 hours but there are many a-la-carte options available in addition such as RS clutch, LWF, LSD, intake, exhaust/header combo's, etc..all of which will add $$$ and labor. We retain the Cayman brain and as the San Diego dealer for REVO Technik, will apply code on the dyno with REVO to fine tune the ECU specifically to optimize your car and intake/exhaust config. (ranging from mild to mean/aggressive/OMG loud) Our own X-51 Cayman uses slightly modified X-51 headers and our own hand built exhaust and 200 cell cats. We also have several suspension options available again to suit your intended use and driving style (sport springs with or without PASM, Bilstein PSS9's and Moton's). Our own car also has a GT3 cup front fascia, center radiator, suspension components and other bits. Both local Porsche dealers (Hoehn and Pioneer) are familiar with us, our cars and each refer interested customers our way for this specific upgrade local or otherwise. We are also a Rennlist site sponsor.

Here's a link to a brief sound clip of our car.

Also checkout 9ff.de website and Orbit Racing in Florida. They are both doing 997 conversions.

Jordan,

I take it that the 2.7 engine is exchanged for the 3.8 correct? This looks really interesting.

Thanks,

Scott

It's not a core exchange, you get to keep your engine.

I guessing you can't keep the milltek headers/exhaust on if you do this exchange? thanks

The headers no, the mufflers, possibly.

EDIT: - My tech's tell me full retention of the header/exhaust combo may in fact be possible.

Very interesting. Does anything else 'need' to be adjusted to accomodate the increased power (cooling system etc?). Increased brake system prob would make sense too.

We mandate the addition of a 3rd radiator up front for improved cooling. Everything else is a-la-carte. Our current car is using the stock Cayman transmission, brakes and clutch (suspension is currently a mix of GT3 components and PSS9 coilovers). We drive the car pretty hard and so far, no issues with brakes or gearbox. There's no doubt that a LWF/RS clutch pack would be a big benefit as would a brake upgrade but so far, no complaints. The former and a short ratio transmission would take the car to a whole new level. I'm starting to wonder if the 5 speed out of the base 2.7 wouldn't be fun to try? The only noticeable difference is stepping immediately out of a 997GT3 with a brilliant gearbox & PCCB's....suddenly everything else feels sloppy and all other brakes feel like their shot!
