Can aftermarket flip up nav be installed in cayman dash?
Without having a car to look at, can one of the flip screen units replace the radio in the dash?
Is there clearance for the screen to rotate out and up without blocking anything major?
Most of the new units are 7" screens, would that width work?
Looking for an 06' (S) but they all seem to lack nav...and don't want to spend what is basically 10k more for an ordered car to get the option.
If anybody could take a look and tell me what they think it would be appreciated.

Messing with the fiber optics is an invitation to disaster. Others have wanted something like the Pioneer Avic series.

I think I have decided to have a 7 inch touch screen installed by dealer when my car is delivered - Pioneer or Alpine, I have not decided yet. I have spoken to at least 4 people who have had it installed by dealer and all are very happy with results... no one has alerted me to any problems.
My dealer has given me a choice of approx 5 different aftermarket navigations (do not have them here with me), all which they claim are compatible.
Sorry, that is all the info I have now.. but will post more as I get up the study curve.

Fiber optics depend on your car's options.
On my Cayman S, no PASM, no Sports Chrono, and the Sound Package Plus, the only thing fiber optic bus is used for is connecting the radio to the guages for displaying what song is playing in the dash, and for connecting a cd changer if I wanted one. Therefore, there is absolutely no problem with taking the headunit out and putting in an in-dash navigation system. However, don't use a flip up single din, use a double din with custom plate that has a fixed screen, it will fit the large space better. Also, the only amplifier that uses fiber optic connections is the Bose amplifier, if you have the sound package plus, the amplifier uses speaker level connections as do all the speakers driven by the headunit. That means you could change the headunit without running any new wires or changing speakers. - Suneet

Bet,
I havn't changed anything yet, just added a subwoofer. But I've seen several installs now, and I've tested my car by taking out my stereo and firing up the car. No error codes. Eventually, (when my tax return comes so I have extra cash lying around), I will put in a Pioneer AVIC and post some pictures, but I might spend the money on wheels too... just with the subwoofer alone the sound system sounds so much better.
Firehawk, if you have a sound package plus or standard audio (non-S Cayman) you only need to replace the head unit. The amplifier for the system is built into the headunit and the external ASK amplifier is a stupid after-thought that uses high (speaker) level inputs and outputs signal to the center channel and sub. In fact, if you replace the head unit to a better quality, you will get a lot better sound without changing much as the CDR-24 has a 2x25 peak watt into 2 ohm resistance amp, most aftermarket stereos now have a 4x20 watt RMS, 4x50 peak, into 4 ohms of resistance. User jneg has done it and you can see pictures at caymanclub.net under the electronics forum, post "installing aftermarket HU."

touche your are correct no most issues with ask amp.......but you will still have faults wheter you see them or not and they really could casue issues in coprety unrealted componets unless you code the car to have cdr amp whatever you removed as uninstalled

I agree, you will disconnect the fiber optic line that takes info to the center dash, resulting in four dashes in the display where the audio usually is. This will probably lead to a fault within the car's diagnostics, but the user will never see it. Reading over the TSB over replacing the cdr-24 with pcm 2.1, the article says a fault will exist within the computer indefinitley and the dealer should simply disregard it. Also, I would never do this upgrade if you have the multifunction steering wheel option, as that would be disabled and trigger another fault within the system.
