Default Does the Cayman have a numerical designation?

Like the current Boxster is a 987. Is there a number for the Cayman?

C7S was the internal factory designation.

Actually, I've read somewhere that it was 987C.

*I've also read that it was C7S, so I'm not sure which one the actual designation is.

During development, before it was given its name, the Cayman was referred to by Porsche as the C7S. Here's a link to an "Autocar" article from back then. Apart from the C7S references, it's interesting to compare pre-production rumor with current reality.

Autocar reports on the C7S

When I made a Cayman parts inquiry, I received a printout from the parts counter computer listing the model designation as 987c.

I read in an issue of Excellence or Pano that both 987-120 and C7S (Base Cayman will be C7) were used.

I forgot what issue though but it had to have been in the last 6 months. sorry.

When my Girlfriend picked up her Cayman S, I noticed that there was a sticker somewhere on one of the pamphlets that had '987' on it. When I asked the dealer if the internal model designation for the Cayman was 987, he said yes. He could be wrong of course, just reporting what I know.

Part numbers do not dictate what the internal model number is (a Cayenne is not a 955 and a C2 Turbo is not a 965, though both are used within the enthusiast community).

True, not always, you have 993 parts on 996 cars, etc.

However, the numerical internal designation is correct when the cars are referred to as a 993, 996, 955, etc.

They are used in the enthusiast community to differentiate models (usually in the same line...ie, 964,993,996). FYI....A Cayenne is a 955 and the Cayman is referred to interally as reported (C7S and 987-120).

Do you have a VIN example?
By the way, where is the Cayman produced (Stuttgart, Leipzig or Valmet factory)?

Best regards,
Samuel

Your dealer is not wrong it does have the 987 designation just like the Boxster.

They are assembled in Finland by a Porsche affiliate that also builds Boxsters, but the Cayman's engine and transmission are built in Germany.
