I read 987 120 in two different places.

But isn't that the internal code for the revised Boxster? I think they went from 986 to 987,--like the 996 to 997 change in MY05.

Yes, the Cayman gets the same 987 code with 120 tacked on to differentiate it from the convertible. It is also known internally as the C7S.

That's really interesting that Porsche is reusing the Boxster code. Running out of three-digit numbers are we??

thanks.

I always thought the C stood for Carrera as in C4S (Carrera, 4 wheel drive, S model). Obviously I was wrong since my Cayman S isn't a Carrera and won't have 7 wheel drive. I have no idea what it means...I just read it in two reputable magazines.

I have heard C7S as the project number. The chassis code of 987120 does make a lot of sense though. If you look at existing chassis codes....
997110 = 997 Carrera Coupe
997120 = 997 Carrera 'S' Coupe
997310 = 997 Carrera Cab
997320 = 997 Carrera 'S' Cab
987310 = 987
987320 = 987 'S'
Seeing as the Cayman is basically a boxster coupe it makes perfect sense that the chassis code would be 987120, and the forthcoming "Cayman" non S would be 987110.

Today I went to Porsche's "Build Your Own" page: cc.porsche.com. For some reason the page did not load correctly and where the words "Cayman" and "Cayman S" should be, the characters "_987110_" and "987120_" appeared. This would support the idea that the Cayman's internal number is "987110" and the Cayman-S's number is "987120". To be consistent with PTEC's post, that would mean the Boxter would be "987310" and the Boxter-S would be "987320". - just speculation on my part.
