Default Boxster-s questions.

Hi All,
Im Jase, UK based and a few weeks ago bought a high mile 987.1 3.2. She is an honest car and well looked after. I have already road tripped her to Paris and back to blighty and bar some scratching her, she made it back in one peace. Ive given her new discs and pads in the rear. While on the trip she has now a blowing in the exhaust and it looks like there is a crack in the manifold. Is this a common fault? Are these cast and worth having welded up or better of getting n new full system and if a new system, what have you guys used and recomend?
My second question is, can you restro fit the bose rear speaker unit to the cars?
Cheers in advance for reading my questions, J.

Hey Jase,
Welcome to Rennlist.
I'll give you a general answer. My experience is with the 2006/7 Cayman S. The stock exhaust system is very robust and well constructed. And very expensive to replace. That said, if your car has a lot of miles, cracks, etc would not be unheard of. The mufflers at the rear of the car are supported off the transaxle, so the whole assembly moves as a unit. If this arrangement has been modified or is broken, then undue stress could be put on the exhaust tubing where it connects to the cylinder heads. I assume this is the manifold you are talking about? 3 pipes that lead into a smallish round cylinder, which is the "pre-cat". On the stock system the main cats are enclosed within the muffler. Many cars do not have their OEM exhausts, especially downstream of the pre-cats. That can be a long story. All I will say is that if the balance of the system is sound, I would certainly see if I could find someone to patch the cracks you see with carefully welding. You have MOT over there and I don't know what can and can't be done. I'm sure a local specialist can advise you.

Regarding the Bose system, my wife's 2006 has the Bose and my 2007 doesn't. I'm not an audiophile and I don't consider any sports car to be a decent listening environment but I can't say that the Bose makes a big impression on me, good or bad. I will say that forum posts indicate that it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a modern double DIN center stack unit that is compatible with the (now ancient) technology that drives the Bose in the Cayman/Boxster platform of the era of our cars. My 2007 does have an aftermarket double DIN with hands free cell phone, etc. which I do appreciate.

Funny story. Early days with our 2006. We were driving down the road and heard what sounded to be artillery firing in the distance. Not really plausible but that is what it sounded like. We took it to the dealer and found that mice had gotten into the wiring, causing a random short circuit that was firing off the Bose subwoofer!

@harveyf Hi Harvey, Thanks for your responces. Sorry its taken me an age to get back to you. Really appreciate all this info on the exhaust and radio. As for the exhaust i am going to get underneath the old girl tomorrow and have a good poke about to see where there clack actually is but im sure the cobbled streets of Paris and Chantilly did not help the old girl, haha. From what i can see the entire system is standard and i'd like to keep it that if i can. Yes, here in the UK we do have the MOT cert that the cars must pass to be road legal and removing the pre-cats would cause a fail i am let to belive, so no race manifolds for me, doh!
As for the steroe mine has got a double-din Kenwood (plus i do have the old one too). The sound out of the speekers is not good at all so maybe i'll look into replacing the door speakers with something that has a bit more bite. Good story about your 'Sub-canon' hahaha, bloody mice.

@harveyf Hi Pal,
Sorry for the late update. Eventually got round to having someone look at my exhaust yesterday. A small crack was found on the left side where the CAT meet the manifold branch. It was about three inches long but was told it was more outer metal skin coming away then an actual crack but they zipped it up for me for free which i thought as very kind. The car still has a blowing sound but not sure where else it is coming from. Do these exhaust summer with rusting or cuch in any other locations?
