Hi Guru’s,
My journey into my first Porsche has had some twists and turns - I’ve almost researched myself to a standstill.
I feel I might have found the one for me - test drive tomorrow or the next day.
Outline 2006 987.1 Cayman S
Total Kms 205K (127 000 miles)
The engine was rebuilt 40 000miles ago (actually “exchanged”, from Australia!!) for a Flat Six Innovations Road & Track Performer Stage II solution (Including LM IMS “Solution” and 3.8L)
https://flat6innovations.com/services/track-performer/
Does anyone have any feedback/comment on these rebuilds? (They seem fantastic! Nickasil AL bores etc…)
It is also fitted with a WaveTrac Diff. Are these available in a lower ratio? Other comments/info?
The PO was obviously an aficionado, who I believe did the odd “Hillclimb” in the car, and had the upgrades carried out.
The current owner is less technically minded, but says this car is reving higher in 6th on the highway, than her previous Boxter S did. (This one is on 18” BBS wheels)
Would this mean the Crown Wheel and Pinion might have been changed for a lower final drive? I believe the usual replacement gears, leaves 6th alone? Thoughts?
I’m happy if it is geared shorter, really happy in fact. It won’t be an EDD, but a Canyon Carver, and occasional gentle track day fun thing!
Shocks/Springs/Rotors and pads all recently replaced![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Anything else I should know about a Cayman with 127000miles on it?
The reality is I wont do many miles every year in it.
Thanks for any info - I’m particularly interested in feedback on that engine option.

As far as I know of, Flat6 enjoys a good reputation in the US. Most folks that invest the big bucks for one of their engines usually say damn the cost, I'm never going to sell it! So you are very lucky to have found this car for sale.
My main caveat would be, as you deviate from a stock configuration, you become more and more on your own, as far as understanding any problems that may arise. You probably need to be capable of doing a lot of things yourself or have a sympatico Indie mechanic lined up to keep your car in top shape.
Because of the displacement increase, I would be curious to know if they just allowed the ECU to "learn" an adjusted fuel trim or whether they actually flashed different fuel maps to the ECU.

Thanks for the info.
Re the ECU/Tune : GT3 throttle body, IPD plenum, Softronics ECU and Carnewal exhaust with hi-flow cat headers.
I think the performance is likely exceptional.

I would agree with you regarding the performance. With all those changes to the flow configuration, I believe a custom tune is important to bring out the best results.

On the gearing.
As mentioned, the current owner says this car, 987 Cayman S, is reving higher on the highway in 6th than her 986 Boxter S did.
On my brief inner city test drive, it was indicating 35km/h/22mph @ 2000rpm.
Pretty inaccurate and unscientific, but does that seem “normal” or “shorter” (than stock)
Anyone?

Regarding your question on gearing, there are some modifications to the transmission that some have done to shorten the range between shifts. Better for racing, but you do end up with a lower top end speed at higher RPM due to the change.
May want to see what they have done there.

Check out the Owners Manual at the link below. Page 308. Resolution of the graph is not too great but you should help you answer your question. Thanks to Planet-9 for posting the OM.

Thanks to everyone for their input.
I bought this car - my first Porsche.
There will be more questions - off to the DYI section.
It will be a couple of days before I can pick it up - can’t wait!!!
