Default Stone guard film necessary?

Hi,

My 987.1 Boxster 2.7 has the stone guard film only on one side of the car. I like it better without the film, but... is it really necessary to be there? Is there anybody here who had the paint chipped without the film?

IMHO, it's there for a reason. If you look closely at your existing stone guard you will see that it has taken a bit of wear and tear and that, if it had not been there, the same "trauma" would have been applied directly to your paint. When new they are virtually invisible. They are sacrificial and meant to replaced when they "wear out".

Of course, it's your car and you're the one that makes the final call.

I just bought a Cayman. My 4th Porsche. First thing I did is re-install the stone guard. My car came naked.

The stone guard was absolutely necessary on all of my other cars. I have no idea if it's the same on a Cayman but I assume it is.

The problem is if you don't have it - you will only discover you "need it" when your paint gets damaged. Then it's too late.

On the right color car, black ones can look really great. $45/side or something. They’re cheap, whether clear or black.

I made my own to match the shape or the fender better and cover a bit more space
