Default 987 Classic?

Hi all,

Apparently 10 years after the last production date, Porsche designates the model as a Classic.
Is this information accurate? If yes, is the 987 officially a Classic?

Thanks for advising.

I may be looking at this question through the other end of the telescope - Porsche grants a model the "classic" status approximately 20 years after the start of production.

Both the 997 & 987 were released in 2004, which is why they've just been awarded that status.

plus i think it means parts are now sourced from its restoration/classic supply channels.

I thought "what??? but I googled it and you are right. 10 years. I have no direct answer but just this weekend I was talking to my neighbor, who is a Classic Brand Manager at the local Pcar dealership. I can give him a call and ask. I do recall he said that he has mechanics who receive additional training on the older cars and he mentioned that a lot of their young mechanics are enthused to go that route.

Thank you for confirming the Classic status for 997 and 987.

What's interesting is that it's really only the 9X7.1 that have this status. I believe this is why the bezel for the current PCCM+ is in Galvano Silver and why black is not yet an option.

As a follow up to this discussion, I spoke to the Classic manager at Porsche Southpoint in Durham, NC. You can google Porsche Classic Partner and get the official blurb. A couple of things he mentioned. One is that they send a small team of techs to
"school" to learn about the older cars. So the (limited) number of Classic Partner dealerships in the US are more likely to be in a position to work on your older Porsche. He also said that the Classic Partners would work a lilttle harder to find parts, in some cases reaching outside the Porsche parts supply chain. And they are going to plan a few fun events over the course of the year aimed at the owner of classic Porsches. I am sure there is more to it but these are some highlights.

A trivial, but significant, data point - there is also "Originale" the recurring free publication available at Porsche service departments. It's focus is promoting Porsche Classic and Porsche Classic parts. IMHO, they're extremely well done. New releases are announce on YouTube and in Panarama. I find myself quickly consuming them cover to cover.
