Default ‘05 Boxster S - Won’t start, please help!

‘05 Boxster S Manual

Original issue - car wouldn’t start, suspected phantom drain or battery.

Original diagnosis: faulty starter.
  • Replaced starter and AOS (made sense to while I was in there) and trickle charged the battery.

Result: Car started and drove to auto store to check charging system: result bad battery (40% charge)
  • Replaced battery, started but ran rough and eventually choked off.

New suspected diagnosis: detached vacuum line during starter replacement.
  • Found vaccum line and reconnected, replaced breather line also just in case. Battery at 90% so no phantom drain.

Result: car starts but immediately dies, backfire heard. Tried starting again, car turns over and immediately dies again.

I’m at a loss… the major issue started when I swapped to a new battery. All fuses are in tact, no warning lights other than traction control (typical w/ new battery install). I’ve tried unplugging the MAF sensor but there no change.

What do I need to look at next? Your help is greatly

look for something else that was disturbed when diagnosing original problem? you mentioned something about the AOS, right? that's where i'd start.
