Default 987 oil choice??

I have a 2008 cayman s and a 2001 boxster, they both (especially for the cayman) make a dry ticking noise on cold start for a few seconds, I am currently running liquimolly 5w-40 in the cayman and liquimoly 10w40 in the boxster both with some liqui Molly additives, which I feel has reduced the tick but it might have been since the previous owner just didn’t change the oil in a while. I recently went to Porsche to get the stuff for a new oil change and was just given Mobil 1 high fuel efficient 0w40 and the oem filters and stuff. Should I run this in the car along with my usual bottle of liquid Molly ceratec and lifter additive? Or should I save it for a different car and only run the 5w40 I previously used, the car is driven in all Southern California climates and pretty often driven hard-ish. The cayman has 160k miles boxster has 115k miles

This will be a hotly debated subject, everyone has an opinion...

Here is mine...
1) you drive your car as it was designed (street not track)
2) Porsche knows what they are doing.

Run the oil that porsche recommends in the owners manual (which i believe is Mobil1 10w40). Skip the additives and fancy name.....

Just my humble opinion... Im sure some will say I'm crazy and mobile1 causes instant bearing failure... flame suit on...

Here's my recommendation, and my recommendation is the end all, be all....but not really.

Mobil 1 isn't what it used to be. The formulation is geared more so to fuel economy and tree hugging hippie lobbyists, or whatever/whomever. A big reason for the bore scoring epidemic in these M9x engines is due to the fact that folks religiously adhere to the Porsche owner's manual that states to change your oil once a year or 10,000 (or is it 20,000) miles with Mobile None. Please don't quote me on that interval as I use my owner's manual as a nostalgic keepsake only.

Use Driven DT 40 for your port injected engines every 5k miles/6 months.

OK, I think we have bracketed the possible responses. Let's move on - to discussing K&N air filters

For starters, the lifter tick (as it has been described) is normal esp. on cold start but you can still hear somewhat it when warm. I know more people who say this is common than those who say they've never heard it on the M97 or the 9A1 engines. After 10 years of Cayman ownership across both cars, it's never been a problem. I've used Mobil One on both my base 987.1 as well as my 987.2 S. Both of these were tracked 5-6 times per year, and for both of them, I did a Blackstone analysis every year. No reference has ever been made to the oil breaking down, nor have there been abnormal wear metals showing up. Although anecdotal, this has compelled me to "leave well enough alone,"

Changing oil more frequently (6k mi) is probably better than arguing about which brand is better...

Does your neighbor's oil work better in your car?

i can't say yet as we are still in the midst of a comprehensive statistical study of oil and oil additives, so we are being meticulous WRT changing our oil AND filters every 6k miles. so far, the only item worth mentioning is that the cost savings are greater than anticipated. one of the cars, or possibly both, is burning a bit of oil, so occasionally we need to supplement the supply.

we are engaged in a tire study too. you know... mileage, ride quality, price, longevity, etc. and to that end, have been rotating our tires. his left front to his left rear and then his left rear to his right front then his right front to his right rear, then his right rear to my left front, etc., etc., etc., and then finally my left rear to his left front. oddly enough, we seem to be getting TWICE the mileage on our tires as expected with a commensurate cost savings!

Hey, speaking of oil changes, add in an oil analysis if you're being serious.

I used to use Joe Gibb's racing oil on my 2006 Boxster, but that was when I was autocrossing and tracking it frequently.
