Hey guys, new to me 2006 Cayman S that's going to be my track car. I'd like to get it to pass the state inspection. It doesn't have cats, so I know that's never going to be in the ready state, but I can still pass as long as I don't have TWO items not ready. So evap...
I guess the gas cap is the most common failure point, but mine LOOKS tight and in good shape. Haven't replaced it yet though. I have a PIWIS and I'm trying to learn how to use it. Today I discovered it has a "Short Test" feature that goes through a bunch of diagnostic tests. The first several passed fine. There were a few related to the evap system (I believe) that did not. Let me show you a few screenshots and see if anyone here knows what I should check or maybe how I can use the tools I already have to further diagnose this.
Any help/tips greatly appreciated. I will, of course, eventually make a video for my channel to help the next guy that runs into this! Doesn't seem to be much info out there (that's clear enough for me to follow at least)
there are plenty of free apps for android and apple phones that will talk to a bluetooth OBDII device. they will give you some information on the nature of the tests that can be made and those that have completed successfully since the last start and those that have remained checked since the last smog test.
i'd take a close look at each test that was not passed and why. in many cases the test will not even be run, as the car's ECU has yet to gather enough information to warrant that test. an insidious pre-requisite for one of the tests, that no matter what i did, would not be run. apparently, it needed the gas tank to be LESS than 1/2 full before even running the test and the engine had to be at ambient temperature. and of course, i always fill up the car after a drive. so, i had to eventually take it to the dealer and for about four hundred dollars they got the test to trigger and run, successfully of course. a troubling thing occurred when i asked about what they had done to trigger the test. they pretty much said they wouldn't tell me. ...not good...no.
I had the same issue. I was told the system just needed time to go through cycles, and focused on the drive cycles to get there. Unfortunately, it never got there.
What my or may not be unrelated, I needed a new air oil separator. After that was replaced the evap system read ready. Not sure when (might have just been driving).

thanks for the response! I tested the AOS with a manometer pressure test and it’s fine, so that’s not my problem. I’ve also put at least 2k miles on it…
I bought an '08 987 back in February and immediately changed the battery and belt, which, obviously, reset the emissions equipment. It took roughly 1,000 miles for both the EVAP and secondary air system to be ready for testing.
