The more important question would be how anyone changing the headers is able to remove the original head studs/manifold bolts or original O2 sensors without them snapping or damaging threads. The original O2 sensors and manifold headstuds tend to get married to the structure. Permanently.

Running long tube headers with high flow cats is a great alternative. HJS 200 cell catalytic converters flow almost as freely as a straight pipe but without the smell of gas while being emissions compliant. I've read they claim to flow 92-97% (if I recall correctly...definitely mid 90s) of a straight pipe.
I just installed catless headers I ordered from UK topgear, very reasonable price and beautiful piece. I had no CEL with them even without spacers. I just added a softronic tune to take advantage of the mods, cant' wait to try it on track.

It's the softronic tune that is actually getting rid of the CEL, in which case whether you do or don't have O2 spacers does not play any factor.
How do you like those headers and the catless odour?
How much of a performance difference did you notice, if any, between the:
-stock map (w headers) vs. softronic flash (w headers)?
-I would love to hear these headers in person, incomparison to other brands.

For those running headers and exhaust with no cats, how did you deal with the lack O2sensors and error codes?
Either:
1. O2 Spacers. Not a permanent solution, it reduces the chances of getting a CEL, but eventually at some point (every few months) you will still get a CEL. In which case; either -get an OBD scanner code-reset device, or -disconnect battery and reconnect.
2. ECU Tune that incorporates a map to eliminate/account for the CEL/code.
