Default PDK Issue

My PDK failed in my 2009 Boxster S and garage unable to repair but seems to indicate internal issue. No new or rework units are available from Porsche in US or Germany. I have a warranty but need a transmission. Anyone aware of any 987-2 units available? I found a 981 S unit but it has different part number. Any help is appreciated.

Both of these are used - and possibly a bit "iffy"..

A few questions:
1. What shop gave you their opinion that they couldn't repair the PDK?
2. Did the shop tell you what they think is wrong with your transmission?
3. Have you confirmed with a Porsche dealer that no transmissions are available? If that's true - what is their time frame for them becoming available?

Have you read the sticky we have about repairing the PDK transmission? https://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-...r-summary.html it's really a lead-in to the much longer discussion going on in the 997 forum (which uses basically the same transmission): https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...nsmission.html

The last thread above is really a useful one. It should guide any competent mechanic familiar with transmission work to be able to repair your existing transmission. It has links to the parts that are available (through Porsche, and more importantly - through aftermarket vendors) and how to diagnose what parts might be needed. I also believe LN Engineering (an advertiser here) has mentioned reworked PDK transmissions they modified for race car use with much higher HP engines. It would seem they might also be worth contacting if for no other reason then they might have suggestions for you.

There was a thread about a PDK that appeared to fail. The owner of the car sold it inexpensively to another member here, who cleaned some electrical connectors to the transmission and it started working correctly again. I don't know that the long term outcome of that transmission was reported since I believe the chap who bought it was modifying it as a race car.

And I'm curious (as an '09 PDK owner) what your failure mode was..

The PDK has not given me any issues since. BTW, the car was not modified, bone stock.

Just curious, if you still have a warranty for it and they can't find a transmission...what would be the solution to it, would they declare the car as totaled?

Thanks for your information and experience and most for your kindness.

The shop inspecting the car is very respected, owner a former master mechanic with large Porsche dealership. He has not worked on a lot of PDK issues but is consulting a local Porsche racing group. I have shared the technical papers with him and should get update soon.

we have checked with two Porsche dealers, one being Suncoast and both have confirmed that no new or rebuilt units are available in US or Germany. Maybe ZF has some. The cost for the transmission is around $19k with $7k less with core return. Installation and tune not included.

I will get the error codes but the initial test highlight a number of codes and believes they point internally. I had not had any signs of issues but started it up one day and it would not engage and got an emergency error on monitor.

My current mechanic is good to do more analysis and testing this week and if he can not resolve, we may try some garage that may have had more experience. Anyone knowing of a person or place in Philadelphia area would be very helpful.

We will consult with third party warranty company but likely place order for rebuilt factory unit and wait till it comes. The only place I know about who reworks PDK’s is Westside in LA, They can only rework some PDK’s others are unable to be reworked effectively.

Again, I very much appreciate the thoughts and knowledge that so many of you have shared. Will keep you informed. Howard

Have you tried Kevin at ‘The Porsche Specialist’ in Broomall? I don’t have a PDK but the shop there told me they service/repair them in house.
