Default Intermittent starting issue - potential switch problem?

2005 Boxter S with ~67,000 miles

Every now and again I will get in the car, insert the key, instrument panel lights up and I turn the key all the way clockwise and.... nothing. Starter doesn't turn, nothing. I have to remove the key, start the process over and have yet to not be able to successfully get it to crank but sometimes it will take multiple attempts. I would say this happens maybe 30% of the time - otherwise, I hop in, turn the key and it fires right up.

I do have a spare key but another family member has it at the moment - I will try that and see if maybe it's just a problem with my primary key. Any other thoughts? Switch maybe? If so, how hard is that to replace? Does it require the dealership due to security components?

Thanks for any help!

In order of probability (IMHO)

Clutch starter inhibit switch - it won't let you crank the engine if the clutch isn't all the way down. When it fails - it won't let you start the car anytime. Has been known to be intermittent.
Ignition switch - but not a high probability since the other systems of the car turn on as normal.

The ignition switch can be had separate from the ignition cylinder (where the key goes) - so dealer intervention shouldn't be needed.

Thank you for the quick response! I'll pay attention to see if I'm getting the message to "depress the clutch" when attempting this next time it fails to start - I would presume that would give me some indication as to if it is the inhibitor switch or the ignition switch.

My 05 S issue with non-start was the key. New battery, adjust and clean the contacts; try squeezing the electric bits of the key while you start. Try this first.

Thanks everyone!! I’ll try the key first (have the spare in hand now) then move to replacing the clutch switch.
