You'll probably miss the interior space and linear power rush, but not as much as if you had an S. I started my Porsche history with an 08 997S, manual, PSE, Bose, PASM, full leather. it was quite nice. The motor howls. Never drove a 3.6 so no idea there. I did have a 718 GTS for a short spell. I'd rather have a 911, specifically T, in terms of post 2016 cars.

I came from a 997.1TT (still have it) but I LOVE driving the 981 so much I have hardly driven my 997.1 much since I got the new-ish Cayman. If I could only have one? Certainly would keep the TT. But if I had a NA 997.1? Would be a much tougher call, the Cayman would probably win.

I have a 991 and a 987. Both are very different. It's kind of the antithesis of the move you're talking about coming from a newer 911 to older Boxster.
The Mid engine cars are absolutely more engaging/exciting to own but won't ever match the feeling of that crotch rocket in your avatar... but will get you closer. I believe demographic has a lot to do with this potential move. if you're younger than I think you'll enjoy the 718 more; frankly. All new cars are getting so fast with so much more capability... hell, a Camry has 300hp now! I like the analog, no electronic options 987 because they just don't make that kind of car anymore and I enjoy driving it. If you grew up around the tech than the 718 packs a ton of it and will likely be a lot more enjoyable than your "old" 911. If you are over ~35 then the 911 represents an icon and driving enjoyment that just isn't found in any newer cars. If that enjoyment outweighs magazine specs and tech then the 911 is going to be more enjoyable to own.
Someone will inevitably recommend driving them back to back but we all deliberate options like this and you're asking in a community that has the commonality of considering this.

I previously had a 997tt and recently obtained a 2015 Cayman GTS. Both 6MT. Cayman has X73. 997tt had limited slip rear diff and PCCB's.
I grew up dreaming of a 911. The 911 was low mileage and it felt like a chore to keep it as near to perfect as I could.
After ownership my new dream was to be able to daily drive a Porsche sports car. So here we are.
Newer is usually better for daily driving duties.
But everyone gets to make up their own mind.

I just bought a 2014 981 Cayman S and love it.
I've previously owned a 997.1 S and a 997.1 GT3 and I don't really miss either as street cars.
The Cayman is quicker than the S and almost as quick as the GT3.
If you manage the gears properly, it's a ton of fun. No regrets.
