Default Pads cracked

Hello,

just bought my 2013 Boxster S last summer so I’m kind of new to working on it.

Ive noticed the brakes squeaking lately when coming to a stop. Only on gradual stops and only just as you come to rest. Wasn’t doing that before. Not super loud but annoying.

Took apart the rear brakes tonight and found two things:

1. The pads have cracks in them. I didn’t check the depth but was wondering if this is ok.

2. The pad wear sensors have contact marks on them from scraping by the rotors but there looks to me like there’s plenty of pad material left. There’s no brake warning lights/messages flashing up either.

Should I replace the pads?

Thanks,
Ken

If you're still tracking the car, then definitely replace. If you don't track or autocross, it's still time to replace, but not dangerous looking. It's hard to tell from your photo, but it looks like you're at maybe 50% thickness.

I would remove the sensors and keep going. Plenty of meat there.

^ Yes, remove the sensors and zip tie them out of the way. You can inspect the pads visually without burning up the sensors and having to replace.
I am uncertain about continuing to use the cracked pads. There is plenty of material left but the cracking is weird. Maybe just a function of age and heat? I would just go ahead and put new pads on. No great rush though.

Thanks for the replies! I should clarify that my avatar photo is of my 987.2 that I don’t own anymore. Haven’t tracked my 981 yet. But probably not this year given the brake pads.

Are there any higher performing pads out there that don’t squeal like pigs but are also street friendly?
