Hi Guys,

Just bought a 2008 Cayman S and noticed the brakes seem terrible, I checked the rotors and pads. pads have plenty of life in them and rotors look great with no pulsating in the pedal. Receipt from previous owner shows they were all done within the last year and about 10K miles on them.

I did notice what appeared to be glazing/shinny surface on the rotors. I have a 968 and my 26 year old brakes on it will out stop this thing hands down!! I assume its not correct any ideas?

having said that can anybody recommend a new set of rotors and street/track pads? I will be doing a couple track night events and will be pretty hard on the brakes.

Going to flush the system with Motule RBF 600 and see if that helps,

Cheap/junk pads could also be the culprit.

Receipt shows he paid 900 dollars for OEM brakes/rotors, I know that doesn't mean that's what made it in the car but I would assume they did?

Pull the pads and check who makes them.

 

maybe a brake fluid change and clean the rotors. Whoever detailed the car before selling sprayed some product all over and is preventing the pads from biting.

Stupid question but is it advisable to sand the rotors to try to get that Sheen of them? They are just so shinny!!! I think there glazed over and pads cant get a good bite. Going to take advice and pull them off and clean with brake cleaner and see if that helps

if its not rusted then I would not. just use brake cleaner and use a good shop towel to dry it.

 

Take the car to a deserted road and do some pad bedding in exercises. In other words beat the crap out of them

 

I'm new to the forum but have the same car just recently purchased to use as primarily a HPDE car. As others say, I would take out the pads and take a look, no harm in giving them a light sand if they look glazed or unclean. At minimum a thorough brake cleaner wash of the discs.
And of course you could give them a light sanding/wash but the back is hard to get to without removal. I just put all new rotors and race spec. pads on mine and they squeal like a pig until hot but they have waaay more bite than the all season tires. Better tire/rim combo is ready now for the next event.

 

^^ This...... you would be surprised at the change. After my first DE with my '11, the brakes felt "re-bedded" and grip was much improved.

 

Give RS29 Pagid pads a try. They squeal a little, but are great for track/street.
