Convert 987.1 Boxster to Spyder
I have a 987.1 Boxster and really like the looks of the Spyder. It appears that the 987.2 Spyder engine lid would fit directly on my Boxster if I remove the rear trunk lid, spoiler, and the convertiable top deck lid. The one thing I would like to know is if I could attach the spyder lid to the OEM brackets for the convertiable deck lid so that I could manually move the top up and down. Now, I would like to keep the original style soft top but add the two flaps that lock into the spyder lid, pretty much making it look like the 981 Spyder. With that, I wonder if the convertiable top could fold manually up and down like the does normally if the Spyder lid was opened whilst being hinged on the OEM convertiable deck lid hinges.
thanks for the help!

Actually, there is a professionally developed 986 Spyder conversion out there:

TuneRS has some damn good builds on their website and they all look high quality. I wouldn't mind having them take on this project, but only if they were right next door. I have found Spyder engine lids for sale ( https://parts.porschechandler.com/p/...201109GRV.html ) and wouldn't mind taking on this challenge myself, just don't want to get into a money pit and it not work as intended.

I wouldn't mind just having it without the top, but if I can make it all work then I want to. I'm deciding whether or not to try and connect the lid to the deck lid mount or to use something like the 981 hinge. The 981 hinge is a safe bet because it will push the lid up and out of the way, allowing me to keep the original top mechnism. The only problem is I have no idea how I can retrofit those hinges on my car.

There's an idea - forget the top. Just get the Spyder rear deck unit from TuneRS. Then like the sainted Colin, add lightness... No top? Then ditch the now-unneeded side windows, plus all the associated hardware in the door. Fabric door pulls, baby. Lightweight bucket(s) - ditch the passenger seat and cover that part of the cabin with a tonneau. Hmmm - where can sheet-metal be replaced with carbon fiber? Can the windshield be cut down a couple of inches (w/shorty wiper blades)? Out-spyder the Spyder designers!
