Default Any Direct Injection Issues?

Apparently some other brands of cars using direct injection only for fuel delivery (no supplemental port injection) can develop very dirty intake valves (the back side). It is presumably due to the lack of cleaning effect fuel delivery by port injection has on the valves. I think the main symptoms are rough running and poorer fuel mileage, and I believe it doesn't show up until 40,000 miles or higher. Is this an issue with DI only Caymans?

I was semi-seriously looking for a 2009+ (to avoid possible IMS bearing and engine oil return issues) Cayman S, but if the specter of engine removal for valve cleaning is very real, I think I'll have to remain P-car-less! Thanks everyone.

If I missed this being addressed in threads that my search didn't catch, my apologies in advance.

The 2,9l engine 2009-12 is not DFI. My Cayman R has 48k mi and runs fine. Lots of track miles.

Monitoring a few forums for many years, never once have seen this issue. I have a 2009 CS with 25k Miles, runs perfectly.

Those are typically in turbo cars and installing a catch can can resolve the issue. I had a BMW and it was a common issue.

However, with NA motors it doesn't seem to be that big of an issue. I've also heard that the Porsche AOS will help prevent the issue as well.

No911Dave,

There are plenty of threads around about the problem. Just Google "987 DFI problem." I was interested in this issue as I have a 2010 BS. After searching and reading, I concluded it's a "maybe" issue -- maybe you'll have it, maybe not. I never saw any reasonably accurate predictor for it. What I did see was that for those who develop the problem, the cure is easy and relatively cheap (for a Porsche).

My advice is to ignore the problem in your buying decision. Enjoy the car. Deal with the problem IF it ever crops up.

Good luck!

Unfortunately just moved and gave away my 20 year Excellence collection. No known service bulletins on the '09 CS DFI. I have read some early Bosch HP pumps were presenting problems and that part number 9A1 110 315 02 was superseded with 03. Also some claim that the engine should have an oil change at 5000 miles. Others claim that a good quality gas should be used. Could not find any pictures showing 9A1 DFI motor internals with a problem.

My mechanic complains about this issue all the time and says he sees it consistently on higher mileage direct injected engines. I have a '12 Carrera GTS and a '16 Spyder. No issues yet but still low miles on each.

My understanding is that spirited driving resolves a great deal of the buildup issues with direct injection engines. Get out there and drive these cars the way they were meant to be driven!

Miles just add to the accumulation on the injectors, not necessarily the cause of the issue.

the cayman s models are direct fuel into cylinder injection. The base cayman 987.2 is plain old intake / behind valve fuel injection.
