Default buying advice 2009 987 Boxster

RListers, I'm looking at 2009 987 PDK Boxsters and would like advice on what to look for regarding a PPI. Oil leaks? rear main seal? Convertible top issues?, PDK issues? What should the mechanic look for? Also, the car has run flat tires and I was told that is original equipment (these are new) but I can't confirm Porsche put run flats on these cars? I'm told run flats are to be avoided. And the car has an aftermarket touch screen head unit, Eclipse brand. Not a fan, doesn't play CDs. What options do I have regarding head units. The car has Bose speakers. Thanks in advance for your help.

PPI should examine all those items mentioned.

Runflats are junk.

I had an 08 booster s and a 12 black edition s, had absolutely no issues with either of them. Both were manuals, the Michelin’s weren’t run flats. They were both excellent cars,

thank you gentlemen, did Porsche put run flats on the 2009 Boxster? Either standard or as an option? I find that difficult to believe.

Both of mine had OEM Pilot Sports/2. No run flats.

Find a good PPI - that is the key. They will look for all of these things. In general there are very few widespread issues with the 987.2's. As for run-flats, no that does not sound OE, but they are tires so not a huge deal - I'm guessing someone at some point felt the need to use them. On the head unit, you could certainly switch back to OEM, there are all sorts of options available on ebay, or any local stereo shop can swap in what should be a double-din unit. If it were me, I'd consider going back to stock although you'll lose at least some bluetooth functionality.

My understanding is that run flats were required in all cars that do not provide spare tires, including space-savers. Not sure whether 987's had spares or not.

I was under the impression that Porsche went to the goop and inflator for all of their sports cars since 2005 although the Cayenne may be the exception.

Your Spyder should have the same also.

It’s a weight and space saving measure.

You're probably right. I'm going to have to open that frunk one day and look in there.

thank you RL folks, I knew I'd find an answer. Yes, the car had no spare and the car had RFs so a previous owner decided to go that route. so, if I pursue this car I'd replace the tires, get a spare tire kit and go back to OEM head unit.

Another option is to get the goop and compressor (if its missing) and sign up for AAA to handle any catastrophic failures.

Suncoast (no affiliation) offers a spare for the Boxster. https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/987STK.html

Not cheap, but you won't have to wait to have your Boxster towed anywhere. I bought mine off eBay for $400 from someone who had sold their Cayman. Going to Rennsport in Sept, and don't want a tire problem costing me a day or more.
