Default Sell 2011 e90 m3 for 987.2CS?

Hello gents!

I have an e90 m3 w/ 6mt and zcp package I use as a part-time fun car that I drive about 2k miles a year. I have considered selling it and replace it with an 09-10 987.2 CS w/ 6mt. Which do you think is the better overall PT fun car? I rarely use the back seats in the M3, but they come in handy if needed. I don’t track my m3 even though I have talked about it for years. I absolutely love the v8 in the M3. It is high revving and sounds stellar with the aftermarket exhaust. The Cayman appeals to me because it would be even more agile and sporty. However, let me preface the majority of my driving is on city streets.

I daily drive a 4-door GTI, which is my workhorse and also have an 07 GT3 as my weekend fun car that gets used maybe 1k miles annually.

Which do you think is a better complement to the GTI and GT3? M3 or CS?

Thanks

I'm not up to speed on current values but can you swap cars for essentially no additional out of pockets costs? Because if you already have the GTI and GT3, I just can't see why you wouldn't do the swap. Mid-engine handling should be experienced by all enthusiasts at some point, IMO.

I'd get a 987.2 Boxster S, then you have a convertible in your stable and it's nice and different from the M3 or the GT3.

^^^^^^E90 is the sedan and the E92 is the coupe.......OP, you'll miss the growl of the S65 but you'll be rewarded with much better handling. Plus you won't need to replace rod bearings. I say go for it............Phil

I've had and loved both. I think the V8 M3 is a better all around car (plz don't shoot ) but the boxster/cayman feels more special and rewarding to drive. The GT3 and DD make me think you would be best served with a boxster S with a great sounding exhaust or PSE added.

I came into this thread ready to give you my story about how I sold my e92 for a Cayman S and you should do the same.

However, I think since you already have a 997 GT3, you should keep the e90. You have a rare example sporting ZCP, 4 doors, and 6MT. The e90 M was very much the last of the "good" BMW's before they all went to EPS and turbocharging. Keep in mind, if I had the choice between anything BMW and my CS, I would choose the Mid Engined sports car 100% of the time. I also used to daily a MKV GTI, so we are pretty similar.

Variety is the spice of life and I think having an e90 M3 and 997 GT3 is a pretty awesome garage.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

I really do like my m3 a lot. In fact, it’s been great and might even surpass the e39 as my favorite M car I’ve owned.

However, you know the saying about the grass being greener elsewhere.

I love the M3 and gt3 combo. The question I am trying to answer is which car would I want to grab the keys to first? M3 or CS? Is the CS too similar to the gt3? The interiors are very similar, but obviously the engine placement is different. I assume the handling dynamics are distinctly different.

The GTI is a fantastic daily, but not close to the M3 at all when it comes to the drivetrain and handling characteristics.

I wish I could add a CS, but not remotely an option.

Agreed - check out a Boxster. I have an 07 GT3 also as a weekend car and bought a 981 Boxster S as my new daily driver. I thought about a Cayman S but the Boxster rounds out my car collection better. From a driveability standpoint, the only downside to the Boxster is a larger blind spot on both sides, but no big deal if you have your mirrors adjusted properly.

Unless you are a track rat or car collector, if you had the 987 in addition to the GT3, under what circumstances would you take one out over the other? Yes, I know they're different cars, but you'd have two, 2-seater Porsches that kinda plug the same hole. the E90 is more versatile, and more different than the GT3 compared to a cayman.

I say keep your E90, since you already have the GT3.
