Default Should I buy this 2013 S via CarMax?

So I've waited three weeks for CarMax to move the car from Seattle to San Jose. Now it will not pass smog. They have taken it to the Porsche Dealer to find out the issue. Apparently no check engine lights or codes, they are guessing a bad battery replacement.

Starting to get worried, after spend $400 to have it moved. Some bad jujus on the web about their inspections, etc.

I do plan to take the car to my local indy shops.

Any suggetions/ advice, so far the community has sent me some great checklists and concerns.

What do you think of the $42k price at 45k miles?

Not sure they let you view, but sold in Sacramento, serviced there by the books.

In CA seller is responsible for the car passing smog. If it is unable to pass that is a deal breaker and you should get your $400 back. (Maybe. Not sure how this works if you have bought the car in Seattle and have brought the car to CA. In this case you might be on the hook to get it to pass smog.)

But unless the car is really sick -- and I don't think it is -- the odds are the battery died and was replaced and the readiness monitors are not set to complete. These get reset when the battery dies.

The Porsche dealer service should realize this and drive the car in such a way to get the readiness monitors set to complete. To get these set to complete is not hard in my experience. (I know from my visits to various Porsche dealers/service departments they experience this often. A Porsche is not used very much then it is time to register/smog the car and the owner finds the battery dead. Even if he replaces it the car fails smog and he's at the dealer.)

As for price, I think you are asking this question too late. CarMax based on my limited experience going with a family member who wanted to buy a Lexus from the Sacramento CarMax facility is CarMax doesn't negotiate price. Even if we tell you the price is too high all you can do is maybe walk away from the car but you might be out the $400 and CarMax might charge you another $400 to take the car back to Seattle.

Just consider the $400 to move it as the first of many "$ for nothing" payments you will end up making. It's not a Ford.

I haven't found many 2013 S's with these options for less than $48k, the miles are high but I probably won't put more than 5k on a year...I realize there is no dickering with CarMax. I hope the car has two sets of keys, all the books, tow hook, tools, wind screen...we will see.

Thanks for the reply

I would be happy to take the car to any Rennlist owner in the Bay Area with a 981 S for a test drive , as I've got five days...

I voted - keep looking.

Found this one using the Porsche Pre Owned Car Locator and there’s a few more listed that are fairly close to your price range. This car has way less miles and is CPO to 100k miles. I’m not saying to buy this particular car but I feel there are better deals out there.

Thanks, another $2k to get it to California, or a road trip?

I will try the Porsche locator again.

Cheers
Tim

I agree with McMaster. Very likely that the OBDII readiness inputs have not reset following the battery replacement.

The 2013 you're looking at with 45K miles is not worth the selling price IMO. Car is now almost 5 years old and is nice but for $42K you can do better. The car at Porsche Asheville is a much better deal and is truly a low mileage car. Keep looking, or of course, you could buy my 2016 981S with 680 miles on it for only $75K.

Phil, thanks, I would agree. I'm beginning to think CPO is important and is worth the extra 3-4K $.

Gee, only $75k? Will you take $80k?

Sure! Interested?? If so, PM me. It's a wonderful car in a beautiful color. Now in storage for the winter.

Phil, I was just trying to be funny. Looks like a good one, but way over my budget. I'm in conversation about the Asheville car.

Cheers

In general I don't like Car Max vehicles. The ones I have looked at are usually fleet or corporate use vehicles and they don't do a good job reconditioning them. It might pass for a "normal" buyer but if you are picky or know what to look for you won't be happy, especially at the prices they charge. I have looked at cars with poor resprays on the front bumper, cracked nav screens or worn tires, etc.
I would rather spend more and get a CPO also.

If you want PDK, there are a few up for sale here. I would feel better buying from a private party enthusiast with all records.
