2011 Boxster Spyder 6spd FS in SF Bay Area
Boxster Spyder enthusiasts! I found a 2011 Boxster Spyder 6sp Manual, Sports Seat (not carbon buckets), Chrono, Nav, A/C, 30k miles, White on Black in very, very good condition at CarMax of all places!! Price is $49,999.
Have a 993 and always loved the look of the Spyder and motivated to get one. Well, I test drove it yesterday and it was great. But not great enough for me to endure the wrath of my wife who prefers the 993! So, while I won't be purchasing this one, I know that there are many on this site looking so I wanted to get the word out. Some details:
1. CarMax rules
a. No PPI before purchase
b. They have a 5 days no questions asked policy. So you can have it checked out and then return for any reason. I was going to have a PPI done by Hi Tec in San Rafael ($450) if I was ready to go for it.
c. They have an extended warranty plan which seems quite reasonable. For a 100K miles, 5 years the price is $2,649 with a $500 deductible. Not bad at all. Just no track days!
d. They do financing and having done my homework and shopping around, the rates they are quoting are competitive.
e. Overall my experience (first time) was 100% positive. They were completely no pressure to buy. I would definitely consider them again. FYI -- the car was originally located in LA and I had it shipped up SF to review -- it cost me $150. Very reasonable.
f. The price is the price, no haggling
2. Car itself
a. Exterior -- looks like new, no paint chips, scratches, etc, that I could see.
b. Interior -- Looks real good, some wear on door trim and pull handle. Dash and rest of car look like new. The only issue was the backside of the passenger seat -- had several scrap marks from rubbing against the firewall/rollbar. Like the seat was leaned too far back and someone sat in it while the car was going. I mentioned it to them and they are going to respond back. Looks like would need to be repainted IMO. Both trunks look like new. Has all manuals that came with the car when new.
c. Slight wind noise coming from the rear of the door glass at highway speeds with the top up -- not sure if what I heard was normal or if the vertical seals were worn?? I did not have a chance to drive top down. (A little noise is not a issue for me, but my wife would not have approved!) I did not expected a "sealed" quiet car. I would have been driving it mostly top off, but once in a while...
d. Everything seems to work as it should in the interior -- buttons, *****, etc.
I would still recommend a PPI. While CarMax has their version of a CarFax, I paid the $40 to get a CarFax (PM and I will share). Looks like two owners, water pump changed at under 1K, and the 30K service was recently performed at 27K. Seems like a dealer had this around for a year or so waiting for the market to go up and given that it is flat now, decided to sell.
I have the car reserved under my name until Monday, but was planning to call them Saturday to say I would not be purchasing. FYI -- you cannot find the car on their site anymore. If you are interested PM me with your email address and I will connect you to the agent I was dealing with.

The perfect combination...
will007! I'm what is a called an "enabler" for Porsches. Here's what I recommend: Keep the 993 Targa and wife happy AND... buy the Spyder to compliment the garage. They are the perfect combination. One old school, beautiful A/C'd and the other a top-off, bat-**** crazy canyon carver!

Zeus993 -- great idea! If I had an extra garage space and not two kids in college, then a perfect solution. Love the color combination of your Spyder. Maybe in a few years you get tired of it and want to sell. Let me know! And I like that you are taking it out in the snow!

Kids in college can definitely put a damper on the fun car budget. I agree with Joel that one air cooled and one water cooled Porsche provides the complete Porsche experience. They both offer a very unique driving experience although I will say both lean more towards unfiltered driving pleasure and less so comfort.
