Porsche 982 Cayman S or BMW I8

140K and 357 hp with a 7 year warranty on battery in an AWD car you can drive in big winter----once a year service and no problems---R&T reliably got 0-60 time in 3.7 sec----way WAY more comfortable to drive than the porsche---it's not a novelty car in the least ---and it's a blast to drive

$150k for 357 hp still sounds ridiculous. People give the Cayman's enough crap for being $80k at 350 hp and $100k at 385 hp, and they're much better performers at 1/2 and 2/3 the cost. 0-60 is misleading because electric cars are great off the line. In the quarter, the i8 is slower than even a last gen Cayman S and much slower than 718S PDK (12.4 @ 113 mph on C&D). It's a neat car, don't get me wrong, but it's definitely still a novelty for people who care about the eco crap more so than it is a legitimate performance car competitor to others in its price range. Hell, the thing is 991 turbo money, not Cayman.

Seriously, the I8 was such a miss by BMW it's laughable. Wacky styling, all the performance of a Camaro SS, and a price tag well over $100k.
As far as the OP's actual question, a 982 Cayman S would destroy an I8 on the track. They wouldn't even be in the same league. Think LMP1 car vs. GTLM car.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, as you're quoting stuff from four years ago when it was a novelty to guys like Harris, who, while he liked it, also had some pretty big complaints. I have a hard time thinking that $150k for a car that's 6 seconds slower around the Ring than a Golf R is anything but a joke from a sports car perspective. I own a Golf R and it's kind of a joke in sporting terms. Then again it only costs $37k...

Well guys thanks for all the advice! I just pulled the trigger on a 2017 718 Cayman s PDK earlier this month! Gotta say I'm loving the car in terms of handling and power. Can't wait until its gets drier here in Vancouver to take it to the track!

I wonder why you didn't consider the Tesla performance model. The car is undeniably quick and is a wonderful car to drive off track. Not for me, but many track the car. I have the AWD long range version and were I younger and sillier still I'd like;y try it out there. Can't get past the on-center feel of the Spyder no matter how exquisite the power band of the electric car.

Did you ever drive an i8 to compare?

+1
I researched the i8 2.5 years ago when I got the itch for some serious power and handling.
Drove one for about an hour and was extremely underwhelmed.
Learned it was being called "the super car for girls".. not my words..
Back then it appeared the vast majority of i8 drivers were LEASES. Very few actually bought the i8.
Even then the Leasers were walking away from the car at the end of the term (or sooner).
Was obvious to me that eventually there would be a glut of used i8's on the market at ~$70K (<50% of MSRP)
Also the car manual states there are "no user serviceable parts" on the car, so ANY modification voids any warranty.
Dittos. Even at $70K they haven't bottomed out yet. Different class of car but you can get an i3 for ~$10K these days.
The i8 doesn't have an engine note... it's FAKE and is piped in through the speakers inside the cab of the car.
I opted for a 2008 GenIV SRT-10 Viper.
