Funny, I still do that, every single time! The first top got a tear within a couple of years, from the bars rubbing. Replaced under warranty. The second top has been flawless for almost ten years now, which I suspect due to the process I follow. When opening, I stop half-way, get out, help the vinyl fold at the first bar, on either sides and set it down. I think of it as semi-auto!

Though 982's top is widely considered to be a carry-over from 981, I have a sneaky suspicion that we might see some change. Agree that the zipped window part is very useful to enjoy the soundtrack. Reminds me of NA Miata. Since 982 is gonna be a GT product, they might want to show off their engineering chops. Or, may be not, to keep the costs down. They could at least lose that electrical latch and insulation. It gets pretty quite with the top up. On the flip side, when you are driving all day long during a road trip, occasional quite time with the top up may not be a bad thing!

My kid called me from the road the other day (soCal) to ask how much a 718 Spyder costs because he was sitting right behind one and it was bad ***. I had to chuckle.

I wish they offered the auto-top option on a Spyder, or offered the 3.8 or 4.0 Spyder engine in a Box S -- for people like me who think that the 12lbs in extra weight is worth paying for the auto-top's convenience, and actually prefer its looks, to boot. They already offered a wing-less GT3, so why not offer an auto-top Spyder?

If Porsche introduced an unzippable rear portion modification on the 718 Spyder top, so as to mimic the "bikini" one from the original.. that would be a "killer-app" feature which I would find irresistible.

.. that and the 4.0

Fixed it for ya! But, unlikely to happen, though it would be cool indeed!

True. But they have to do SOMETHING different on the 982. The top on the 981 was no real big improvement over the 987.2, just different and still slightly awkward IMO.

We all await, fingers crossed, index finger poised on the configurator button...

I had to put the top up for dinner at Pebble the other day and when we came out I was struck again by how good the 981 Spyder looks with the top up. I rarely ever have my top up, but it always pleasantly surprises me the rare times I do. One of the few convertible tops out there that actually flatters the overall lines of the car.

No doubt, they are great looking cars.
When I had my 987 Spyder, it was the only time a Ferrari driver actually waved at me. With more than one finger.

^^That’s pretty much the final product from the looks of it! It looks like most of it will be a carryover from the 981 Spyder except the bumpers and side intake.

And the split exhaust vs center.... interesting two tone top gives it a little gen 1 Spyder.

Note the larger PCCB from the GT4 vs smaller ones used on previous Spyder so a bit heavier. Hopefully justified by the increase in power. Hope the GT4 suspension bits are also carried over.

And the lights front and rear, and the rear hips are slightly different/more muscular on the 718 than the 981 body.
