Adding sports exhaust to 2014 Boxster S...
I recently got a 2014 Boxster S. Love the car, I just wish the exhaust note was a bit louder. I have heard the stock sports exhaust, and I really like it.
The dealership said that they can install stock sports exhaust with the toggle switch for the console. Price would be around 4-5k.
Are there aftermarket exhausts that would sound as good? I have an extended warranty to 2020 and don't want to void it.
Any words of wisdom on that might help me decide will be appreciated.

Suncoast Porsche offers the factory sport exhaust for $1995.00 on their website. You should be able to find a local shop to do the install for a reasonable price and save quite a few $. suncoastparts.com

When I checked, Suncoast's shipping charge is an additional $200 or so. Also, I have read that to complete the installation with the activation of the retro-fitted console button requires hooking up to the dealer's computer (can anyone confirm?). Also, to install that button and its wiring harness (and also the vacuum to the exhaust on/off controller) requires a bit of disassembly of the car's interior (which one may not want to entrust to Bob's Corner Muffler Shop). Things may be significantly simplified if one decides to go the always-on path and forego the electronic control of the system.

You can always purchase from Suncoast, and not install the wiring. This will leave the sport on at all times.
If you do have the wiring done, it is very possible to do most of it yourself. I did it in my 2012, I ran all of the wires to where they needed to be. I just had the dealership hook them up to the correct spots. They then plugged my car into the PC and set the exhaust to work.

Also, just to confirm: if only the mechanical parts of the exhaust system are installed, then the default setting will be always-on? That is, it arrives in the shipping box in the always-on state?
Last year, I custom-ordered a Cayman without specifying the PSE (aaarghhh) and have been kicking myself ever since I got a Spyder with PSE earlier this year.

If you are looking for a PSE alternative that has more sound and performance, take a look and listen to our TrackTec system. It wakes up the 981 Big Time

i looked at this same issue when I had my boxter S 2015. I was surprised with the difference in pricing between porsche dealers reference installation. from 200 to 800 with the button and wiring. At the time a guy was selling the actual exhaust for like 1200 used. Decided to get a spyder , so never did it

PSE for the 981 is a great upgrade. The exhaust install is similar to any other exhaust, but as you mentioned about the console switch, it does require dealer programming. We have PSE in stock for $1995, and we often ship to a Porsche dealer so you don't have to pay retail price plus installation. Your factory Porsche warranty on the PSE will be good at any US Porsche dealer. One of the benefits of going OEM.

Mike, the 981 PSE ships with UPS Ground for under $100 nearly anywhere in the country. For reference, shipping from Florida to California is $97. You are correct about the wiring for the console button, dealer activation is required.

How does shipping to another Porsche dealer for installation work? I'm guessing that I need to first clear it with the dealer, then pay Suncoast for the PSE plus shipping, and finally pay the dealer only for the installation cost. That sounds mighty appealing. Have any dealers put the kibosh on such transactions?

Thanks for the clarification on the shipping cost. I got my $200 shipping charge datum from your own website when I clicked on the "estimate shipping" button. Happy to hear that the real cost is less.

Sometimes if the shipping info isn't entered in correctly the site will quote $199 US Freight shipping. It's always a good idea to give us a call or email if it seems off.
If you place an order online be sure to have your "Ship To" address as your local Porsche dealer and then call to set up an appointment once you have tracking info. You might not want to have your car sitting there while the exhaust is still en route. As far as specific dealers not wanting to install parts purchased elsewhere, you'd have to call them and find out. But we do it quite often with no issues.

I hope that I can float some more questions here in public since the answers might also help someone else. I found a topical thread in the 991 Forum:
https://rennlist.com/forums/991/8190...on-a-991s.html
That thread makes me wonder if the complexity of the PSE retro-install for the 991 versus the 991S is paralleled for the 981. It sounds like the 991S w/o PSE already has some extra parts as standard that the plain 991 lacks, making the PSE install on the plain 991 significantly more complex (i.e., much bigger labor bill). Since I have a 981 Cayman 2.7, this gives me pause.
Do you supply the identical PSE install kit components for both the Cayman and the Cayman S?
And finally, as Plan B, if your 981 PSE kit is installed without making any hookup of the controller system, will the exhaust be in the always-naughty-noisy mode by default? That's the way I always drive my factory PSE-equipped 2011 Spyder anyway by automatically pushing the button, so maybe I can tolerate my Cayman in that mode without even having to push the naughty button.
