I was about to say the same thing! There is no perfect system, we wouldn't enthusiast if we didn't bitch about something

LOL.....

Not really sorry you don't like the top. Hopefully they end production soon. Buy something else.

I personally, love the car, top and all. I like the way it looks and the way it works, my only concern is the window isn't glass and doesn't look replaceable. But since many engineers are buying these, I am sure we will make a solution....

That sounds a little glib... Great cars aren’t great *because* of compromises; they are great *in spite* of them. The E-type is so beautiful that people are willing to put up with all of the mechanical and electrical flaws, but these problems do not contribute to the greatness of the car. I would say it is too soon to put the Spyder into this lofty category.

The GT3’s lack of back seats is a non sequitur. The fact that the GT3 has no back seats just means that it has no back seats; it is not attributed to half-assed design. The rear seats are simply absent, and they are absent in a way that is not obviously substandard compared to other two-seaters.

anytime a sports car has TWO trunks.. but the smaller one is difficult to open in certain situations, i would call this a ridiculous bonus, not a flaw.

but maybe I'm missing all the other driver-focused roadsters with amazing looks, build-quality, sub $100k price point, oversized engines and handling .. which have TWO trunks.

i"m quoting myself here because I liked my previous post, is that allowed?

anyway, after approx 6 weeks of owning this car, I have the following subtle assessments:
-OMFG THIS IS AN AMAZING MACHINE!
-also, yes, not being able to use the rear trunk with top up is occasionally a hassle, but the front trunk is so big, I have not yet had the issue. I keep some cleaning supplies, documents, a chamois in the back.. items i rarely use. The front trunk is empty for backpacks, luggage, groceries. having TWO is incredible.. this has to be the best packaged car in the world, nothing like it.. pure genius. am I now a fanboy?.. why yes, yes I am. I'm in love.
-if in the USA we could program the remote to pop the roof so that I don't have to reach inside the car to open roof, that would be better... this would allow me to unlatch the wings and pop rear trunk from outside.. but it's a minor minor annoyance.

if you can get a boxster spyder, I don't care if you can afford a 918 spyder... you should buy this car. it's perfection.

I would put up with a lot more than one nearly useless trunk and a cumbersome top to own this car. It is that good. I will keep my Touareg for those occasions in which the trunk is an issue.

Ok then we will leave it at "the Spyder has no trunk" not trying to be glib. It's just the complaints about the Spyder trunk seem silly once you drive the car, open and close the top, and experience the raw roadster feel.

If you are like me, the top will be down 90% of the time I'm using the car, so the trunk is available.

My 986S was a street car for a few years before it became my track car. As I recall I rarely used that trunk. I always used the frunk, mostly for groceries.

Well, now it is just factually inaccurate ...

haha - agreed - I love the quirkiness - if you know the rules, it is simple. It is not an SUV. Likely not even an owner's only car...but again, you can store stuff like towels, cleaning stuff etc...in the back and use the front for luggage/transporting stuff...that is what I am doing!

hahahaha so true...I never get the complaining. Get a different car if it is not for you. Like people complaining about a GT3 with no back seat - get a Carrera GTS in that case, or a turbo...there are so many flavors of these cars - people mock all of the iterations, and now we see why they make so many. Most manufacturers don't offer nearly these optional configurations. Count ourselves lucky!

I've not driven my 981 Spyder since early January. Taking her out tomorrow and I'm wondering if operating the top will come back to me or if I'll be fumbling so this thread is definitely useful and I'm glad I read it again. I love these cars top and all. Couldn't be happier. I've been asking for a manual convertible top on Mini and BMW forums so I just wish our tops were 100% manual - the electronic locking mechanism is actually the only part that gives me a bit of trouble sometimes.

Yeah, I've had a few situations where it wouldn't latch, complaining about the top not being in the right place. Sometimes takes a bit of fumbling with the open and close buttons to get it to latch.

I did have to run into a Costco in the Spyder once (to get some extra single malt whiskey, that I'd forgotten to grab the day before) and I wanted to put the top up since there were a bunch of seagulls. :/ I ended up leaving the rear buttresses stuck in the top, which removed a few seconds from the top up and top down procedure when I left.

It never occurs to me as I only use the front trunk for my gym bag.
