Default Carmel Valley & Carme Valley Village!

Other restaurants in Carmel Valley & Carmel Valley Village that I recommend:

Baja Cantina (Mexican) on 7166 Carmel Valley Road (not far from Carmel-by-the-Sea):
http://www.carmelcantina.com
The weekly gathering of sport cars & hot rods is on Thursdays! So for Parade week that would be June 19th! (first two photos).

The Baja Cantina owner, my friend & auto collector Pat Phinny, also owns 'Turn 12' restaurant (American) in downtown Monterey - named because Laguna Seca has 11 turns! Might be worth a visit too! http://www.turn12barandgrill.com

Carmel Valley Village (20/30 minute drive from Carmel- can also be accessed via Laurales Grade from Route 68 in vicinity of Laguna Seca):

Cafe Rustica on 10 Del Fino Pl / Carmel Valley Village
http://www.caferusticavillage.com

Corkscrew on 55 West Carmel Valley Road / Carmel Valley Village
http://www.corkscrewcafe.com
The owners, Walter & Gaston Georis, also are the proprietors of Casanova & The Biclyclette in Carmel. Gaston drives a Boxster.

Wine Tasting
Bernardus Winery Tasting Room on 5 West Carmel Valley Road / Carmel Valley Village
http://www.bernardus.com/winery/tasting/index.htm

Bernardus' owner, another friend named Ben Pon is an ex-factory driver whose family are Porsche's importers for Holland! (Last photos. Ben is the one w. dark polo shirt; the other guy is Gijs van Lennep)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Pon

By the way, you can drive from Carmel to Greenfield (on 101, south of Salinas) via Carmel Valley Road and Monterey County G16 Road. Pretty twisty...and a good Porsche interior road to drive!

Parade Participants - Do not forget to bring warm clothing to Monterey for the week of the event (6/15 to 6/21). Our 'June Gloom' weather has started and our marine layer (what non-Carmelites will often call 'fog', although that is not a term used by our local Chamber of Commerce!) is starting to move in.

View from the beach just down my Carmel Point street:

First photo: Mit Fog

Second photo: Sans Fog

To paraphrase the common saying attributed to Mark Twain*, 'the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in Carmel'! So, caveat lector.

Thanks for all the great info Eduardo! For those of us that are just car nuts but not participants does it make sense to drive down on a Saturday? Will there be a place to just gawk at Classic Porsches? I live in San Francisco but have a new born so need to have good reasons to take away my wife's only day off :-)

Also, in your time as a resident down there would it make sense to drive my spyder down or to just ride my motorcycle?

Thanks for all your great input across, well, everything porsche!

Eduardo will chime in…in the meantime…which Saturday…June 14 people are still arriving…nothing organized really going on…June 21 last real day of Parade which will include the Parade of Porsches, 500 cars going through 17 mile drive around 2PM but alas maybe not Laguna Seca and lots of people in town through Sunday. If you can swing it come down early enough on Thursday and go to Baja Cantina by 5PM…there will be a really LARGE group of cars and car nuts there, hangout Friday (aquarium?) and watch the Parade of Porsches Saturday, then head up 1 through Pescadero and have a early dinner at Durate's. Epic Norcal weekend!

Default If you live anywhere in Northern CA, it's worth coming down even for one day!

Yes, it makes perfect sense. You can choose Saturday June 21st (the Parade of Porsches & final banquet will be that day), so as il pirate suggests that would be a great day to come! However, if you can't make it on June 21st, on Saturday June 14th you will find the real Concours nuts cleaning their cars at the parking garages of the Hyatt Regency in Monterey and other nearby places. See attached photos of the concours prep at the 2012 Parade in Salt Lake City!

Some of the best times I have ever had at Parades (and I have been to around 17 or so) were on the weekend BEFORE the Concours! You can get to easily converse with the folks working on their cars and obtain a great deal of information & stories on the various cars that will be on display on Monday! I will be doing last minute prep on my car (Crystal Blue 1970 911E Targa) all weekend at the Hyatt garage...so look me up too!

So either Saturday will be worth coming down! And traffic should not be too bad. Nothing like the August Historics or a major race day at Laguna Seca. So bring your Spyder!

I think you meant June 21st, no? But you are right...on that last Saturday it should be easy to see lots of Porsches in the Monterey peninsula. And the Baja Cantina gathering on Carmel Valley Road should be great fun on Thursday in the early evening!

Parking will be the biggest challenge for this Parade. Paradise never built many parking lots This will be especially a true at the Hyatt. Unlike past parades where there was one large concours prep area, this one will be spread around the five Parade hotels as well as the fairgrounds.

From the Parade Chair...this is for Parade entrants driving Porsches...

As I reported earlier, parking at the Hyatt will be extremely tight during Parade.

For those of you not staying at the Hyatt, during the Concours we have arranged to be able to park on the 14th fairway, very close to the Concours cars. The 'gotcha' is that we will stage for this parking at Monterey Peninsula College at 8 am, and if you miss that staging, you miss out. You will be able to start leaving the Concours at 11:30. You will need to sign up for this parking by going back into your Parade registration via the link on pca.org. We have approximately 180 spaces.

We will also have shuttles running from Monterey Peninsula College from 9 am to 6 pm.

Thanks Manny.

Concours Prep Areas:

Let me try to figure out for you what is going on with Concours Prep so that those of you that want to come visit the folks working on their cars can easily do so the weekend BEFORE the Concours.

According the the Parade website, 'Indoor Concours Prep will be held at the Hyatt Conference Center Garage and the Salinas room at the Fairgrounds. These areas will be available starting Friday, June 13 on a first-come first-served basis."

The Center Garage of the Hyatt can be easily found. The Salinas Room at the Fairgrounds is not that well known. It is apparently a large 7,000 square feet structure that is non-carpeted and has tall vaulted ceilings. From the map, you can see that is fairly close to the Hyatt.

There is apparently a Concours prep are at the Monterey Peninsula College, but that has no cover. I have attached a map of that too so that you see its relationship to the Hyatt.

I and many other Concours participants will try to get a space at the Hyatt Conference Center garage early on Friday. I encourage you all to come to that garage and perhaps the Salinas Room at the Fairgrounds during the weekend to see folks prepping their vehicles for the Parade Concours on Monday. Don't be discourage by this parking issue - where there is a will, there is a way. So come and visit us at the Concours Prep areas!

Concours Day Parking:
That is a different kettle of fish. Manny has just posted the email that went out re: Porsche corral parking near the Concours. That requires PCA Parade entrant (registered) not staying at the Hyatt to pre-position their cars at the Monterey Peninsula College at 8 AM on Monday, June 16th, after which they will be escorted to a special 'Corral' in a preferential spot next to the actual Concours entries.

If you are a Parade entrant but are not staying at the Hyatt and can't make the 8 am pre-positioning, you can still park at the Monterey Peninsula College and get a shuttle to the Concours site. I don't know if they'll let you park there and take the shuttle if you are NOT a registered Parade entrant.

If you have not registered for the Parade and are just coming that day to see the Concours, there will still be areas to park your car and attend the event (which is open to the public) on the Del Monte Golf Course behind the Hyatt! I expect that traffic will be diverted along Mark Thomas Drive and you'll be directed to enter on the side of the Del Monte Golf Course to designated parking spaces a walking distance from the Concours field. That is how it's done for the Mecum Car Auction held at the same location behind the Hyatt Regency on the golf course during the Historics in August. We will wait for further information. And I will then posted ASAP.

Saludos,
Eduardo

Default More Info on Parade Concours

Info on Parade Concours
Since I am showing a car in the Historic Display at the PCA Parade Concours, I am getting some early additional information that I would like to share with all of you.

Attachment # 1 is of the Hyatt Regency Parade Headquarters and what activities will take place where on that property.

Attachment #2 is a Google satellite map of the Monterey Peninsula College parking, the Hyatt Regency Hotel (Parade Central) and the Del Monte Golf course where the Concours Display will take place on Monday, June 16th. The staging area is for those entrants showing cars at the Concours.

Attachment #3 is a Google satellite map of the Concours Display in greater detail.

Attachment #4 is a Google satellite map close-up of the staging area.

Attachment #5 is a Goggle satellite map of the Monterey Peninsula College parking area for Parade entrants and where shuttle buses will be taking people to & from the Concours event at Del Monte.

My understanding is that they will start staging cars on the Concours site on Sunday, June 15th from 1 pm to 5 pm and the rest from 4 am to 7 am on Monday, June 16th. All I can say is that I pray that someone is making sure that the golf course's irrigation system is turned-off on Sunday night & early Monday morning. I hope they'll let me position my car on Monday morning!

They have not told me yet when the Concours event will officially start - but I am assuming the judging will commence by 9 am. We, the Concours entrants, are being told for our cars not to leave the Concours field until 4 pm, but I think some will depart before that late hour! But the general public will probably see most everything by 2 pm and the crowds will start to thin out by 3 pm at the latest.

Concours Day Parking for Non-Parade Entrants and General Public:
No official information yet where non-entrants and the general public will be allowed to park on the day of the Concours to access the event. If you have not registered for the Parade and are coming that day just to see the Concours, there will still be areas to park your car and attend the event (which is open to the public) on the Del Monte Golf Course behind the Hyatt! I anticipate that traffic will be diverted along Mark Thomas Drive and you'll be directed to enter on the side of the Del Monte Golf Course to designated parking spaces a walking distance from the Concours field (see attachment #6). That is how it's done for the Mecum Car Auction held at the same location behind the Hyatt Regency on the golf course during the Historics in August. We will wait for further information. And I will then posted ASAP.

Concours Day Parking if You are a Parade Entrant:
There will be a Porsche corral parking near the Concours but only for registered Parade entrants. That does require, however, those not staying at the Hyatt to pre-position their cars at the Monterey Peninsula College* at 8 AM on Monday, June 16th, after which they will be escorted to a special 'Corral' in a preferential spot next to the actual Concours field.

*See Attachment #2, #5 & #7

If you are a Parade entrant that is not staying at the Hyatt and can NOT make the 8 am pre-positioning at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC), you can still park at the MPC and get a shuttle bus to the Concours site. Here is what a recent email from the organizers said on the subject:

'For those of you not staying at the Hyatt, during the Concours we have arranged to be able to park on the 14th fairway, very close to the Concours cars. We will also have shuttles running from Monterey Peninsula College from 9 am to 6 pm'

I don't know if they'll let you park at MPC and take the shuttle if you are NOT a registered Parade entrant. So caveat lector. The Parade has a notice on Parking which is attachment #8, but that doesn't tell you much.

Concours Prep Areas on Friday, Saturday & Sunday:
(Some of this info I already passed along to 981/987 forum readers here...but its news in other Rennlist forums where I am also posting!)
For those of you that want to come visit the folks working on their cars can easily do so the weekend BEFORE the Concours. According the the Parade website, "Indoor Concours Prep will be held at the Hyatt Conference Center Garage and the Salinas room at the Fairgrounds. These areas will be available starting Friday, June 13 on a first-come first-served basis."

The Center Garage of the Hyatt can be easily found by looking at attachment #1. The Salinas Room at the Fairgrounds is not that well known. It is apparently a large 7,000 square feet structure that is non-carpeted and has tall vaulted ceilings. From the map (attachment #9), you can see that is fairly close to the Hyatt!

There is apparently a Concours prep are at the Monterey Peninsula College, but that has no cover (attachment #7). An earlier attached a map of the area (attachments #2 & #9) shows you the location of MPS in relationship the Hyatt & Del Monte Concours site.

I and many other Concours participants will try to get a space at the Hyatt Conference Center garage early on Friday. I encourage you all to come to that Hyatt garage and perhaps the Salinas Room at the Fairgrounds during the weekend to see folks prepping their vehicles for the Parade Concours on Monday.

Eduardo, thanks for posting all of that information. Kinda makes me regret that I waited too long before asking for the time off work so I could attend...

Will you be posting photos from the parade events during the week?
