Thumbs up 997S to 981S

Hi everyone!

Took the plunge and traded my 997S on a new 981 Boxster S this weekend. My 997 was and is still a fantastic car, but I'm headed for warmer climes and wanted an open-top car. the new Boxster is just incredible. Doesn't have the kick in your pants acceleration of my 911, but the handling, poise, comfort and looks are just what I want in my first daily driver Porsche. After owning a 986S I can say this car is on another level, and not one bit of a downgrade from my 997.

The car is silver over red, full leather, premium and infotainment, stick. Saw one in Agate Gray with the lovely Carrera S III wheels in Platinum, but the silver/red reminds me of the Boxster show car I fell in love with as a teenager. And as nice as the new car's standard interior is, the full leather is inviting and truly luxurious. I had black full leather on the 997 and it somehow wasn't as exotic, maybe it's the bright red that makes it pop.

Don't know how much I'll track her, but my plans are to finally buy a race car and roll down the slippery slope that entails. My wife never knew how much of a car-loving fool I was until it was too late for her to back out, so I'm thankful that she puts up with me.

If anyone has those platinum wheels and wants to swap for perfect Carrera Classics, hit me up on PM.

Out with the old...

Congrats! Looks great! I'm sure you have good memories of your 997S, but I'm sure you won't miss cleaning the sport design wheels. We had those wheels on our 987 RS60 and they were such a pain to clean.

We test drove a very low mileage pre-owned 997.2 S before ordering a 981S. The 997.2 S was really nice, had more torque/straight line acceleration, and that distinctive shape. Its a great car, but after we did back to back test drives of both 997.2S and 981S, we knew we wanted the 981S. We're still waiting for ours to arrive.

Congrats again and enjoy your new 981!

Thank you Dino. I hope you don't have to wait too long, but then again it helps build the excitement.

The 981 is quite a package isn't it? Proper sports car to paraphrase Chris Harris.

Love the color combination and the open air. It's a throw back to the 550 Spyders in the mid-50's. Awesome choice my friend. I too am considering making the jump into the 981 platform from the 997 but at the moment I do have a great open air car and can't justify the change. In the meantime keep us posted with lots of pics and driving impressions. I think there's a lot of 997 owners that just haven't warmed to the styling and price of the 991 and are REALLY curious about the 981. Enjoy and thanks for posting!

Proper indeed. But then again, I think the 986 is too. You're talking to the dude who rocked a triple-white cabriolet in his younger years, the "man card" has nothing to do with what a sports car should be IMO. For years, that's been the only bitch anyone can levy against the Boxster's credibility.

I'll definitely post impressions as I drive more. After reading the 981 technik I'm even more impressed with what they've accomplished with this car.

100% agree. The only 986 I drove was a base with Tip, and even setup that way it was so much fun to drive. Porsche got it right with the 986, made it better with the 987, and just completely took the 981 into a new world.

number9ine-
Beautiful car and bold color choice! I hope to be able to pick a 981 S in the future as they are fantastic cars. I agree about the classic wheels, the S wheels are much better looking. Spokes should not get heavier as they spin toward the outside circumference, they should taper and get lighter as the centrifugal force dissipates their energy, like on the Carrera S wheels. . Just my design aesthetic 2 cents.

Great looking color combo on the Boxster, just like the RS-60 I just traded in on a new Cayman. My Cayman is White over Beige, and loving the PDK. The 08 Boxster had Tiptronic, if it had been a manual I would probably still be in. But the White / Beige on my new Cayman has a sophisticated look on the sporty styling and its growing on me real fast.

Hey number9.

Your new Bosxter S looks very sharp. That is Platinum Silver, right ?

I have been having a blast with mine. I've had one 911 (a 2004 996 with MT) and two Boxsters. The Boxsters have been better daily drivers. You will really enjoy that car.

Eosrebel, it is platinum silver. Looks like yours is too--beautiful ride.

Just took the car out on a coffee run today, and pressed the Sport button. Sport mode didn't do all that much on my 997, but here it's like turning on Mr. Hyde in my throttle. Had to turn it off before I got too extralegal.

Perretar, I was very close to choosing an RS60 for the color combo alone. Enjoy the new Cayman! I test drove one and really liked the extra measure of engine noise in the cockpit.

meteor10, ain't nothing wrong with a 987.2 like the one in your avatar. And the hardtop too, good choice--my wife's 99 Boxster has one and it looks great on the car.

Zirrah, is that the Agate/Amber interior? I have yet to see on in person but it looks great in pics.

Thanks Patty. Happy new year all!

Whoa! Sounds like this guy may have already started his New Years Eve celebrating before posting this.

Yup, it is agate/amber. It's an orangish brown color, similar to Cinnamon from the E46 M3. That's not actually my car though, just to clarify. Just liked the picture.

Great looking Boxster! Congrats!

I am doing the same move soon... from 997.2 Carrera S to 981 Boxster S
