Start a thread on the build please!!

+1 on starting a thread for the build. Do you have an estimate for the total cost (donor car + install)? What happens with the old engine, btw?

Imagine a light-weight 981 Boxster with the 991 "GT3" engine, brakes, and suspension bits in it. The ultimate roadster! Lee's project will come very close to this. Maybe if more people did stuff like this, then PAG would take notice?

Given that it's an engine swap, yes, the warranty will be void. HOWEVER, we are offering a 30 hour labor credit to anyone to be used whenever/wherever and if you're local, we would consider setting up some sort of 1 year drivetrain troubleshoot, whatever. Yes, warranties won't be void after this BUT we're not trying to scare anyone either.
There is no matching of engine serial numbers, etc. and while I am not by any means suggesting this, someone may not even know. BUT I wouldn't suggest it and I would just assume be up front with any dealership about what has been done to this car.

A 30-hour labor credit and one-year drivetrain coverage sounds great. It's heartening to see you believe in and stand by your work in this manner. But what about people like me who live in California? Do you have any affiliated shops out here that would apply that same coverage?

From there, the GT3 engine is not DFI and cannot be run on the stock Cayman ECU like the 9A1 engines can. So, you are talking full standalone from there, with all of the accompanying wiring.
Above and beyond the cost of the engine itself, I would estimate an additional $10k to get it in there.
I only know of one shop that has put a GT3 engine into a Cayman, and they did it along with an inverted Cup Car sequential gearbox to run in GT4 in VLN. That was Jurgen Alzen Motorsports. Probably added $100k to the build cost of the car.

Count me in. Got rid of my 11 RS for the 14 CS. Crazy, maybe, but it's been a lot of fun researching and installing upgrades, and the car is just brilliant from a handling perspective. Can't wait to wring it out on the track. It's also nice to have BGB motorsports on our coast. John and his folks are cutting edge and a proven asset. A great resource for 987/981 performance issues.

If you are talking about a Mezger GT3 engine, the engine won't bolt up to the gearbox. So step 1 is fabricating an adapter plate and custom flywheel to put the two together.

Follow up with me in about a year when you get your hands on that engine and we'll pursue it further.

Okay so I know this thread is months old but I just came across it... I'm very interested in this build for the street for a 2014 CaymanS. IMHO, a 3.8 (esp w/X51 pkg) or bored 4.0L engine is just the ticket for the 981.
As a west-coaster, my concern is getting the car registered in CA. Is it possible that this isn't a problem because it's a custom build; or am I just going to have to use or register the car out-of-state? At one time these types of engine swaps weren't a problem, but a few decades ago they made it so the only engine swaps that you could do were with the same (or newer) engines the car was offered OEM with... Thanks. This is exactly what the 981 needs.

Email me and we can get the ball rolling! Registration is not a problem as the car will pass smog. The warranty will be void but that's it. In a few weeks the 4.0L stroker kit will be finished so that the 4.0L Cayman will be a reality and a well priced one at that!

It is all still somewhat tentative but if the 3.8 conversion is $20K, i'm trying to do the 4.0L for under $30K.
