981 door

981 door
been cleaning and sealing my 981.
the doors really are a sculpture, the way it curves into the side vents, the way there's a hump, like a belly, and the door handles and recess is also wonderfully organic.
it just flows.
so complex, yet so elegant, and not like current trend of having lots of proud and aggressive lines.
truly lovely.
I hope you can see what I mean in this pic:

+1 Very well stated SFO. Very nice swooping and curving lines on both sides of the 981 meeting in the rear with a really, really well done rear design. But I am biased also by ownership.

I agree the lines on the 981 are stunning and I think most everyone who's seen one agrees. I do think it would be even better if the intakes were painted and the headlight washer was painted to blend in.

Your description is pure poetry, sfo !
Let me contribute with my own door sculpture pornography pic below.
I really like the way they are framing the door cut-out with the body panel and how that blends into the air intake opening.
The people disliking headlight washers, please enjoy my avatar pic...

Agreed! Side vents should be black.
That's why I like bright colors on the 981, there are so many black parts that contrasts beautifully to bright paintwork: side vents, rear diffuser, front air intakes... I prefer all those black!

i'm still trying to wrap my head around the 981/991 side-mirrors sticking out of the door itself instead of the usual window corner (where there is now just a black triangle)...not very "flowing" imo, but i guess it's one of those styling decisions that you eventually get used to.

I believe all current day Porsches have the side mirrors affixed to the door panels, the 991 and 981 included. Neither rear vision from within Porsches nor vision of the standard rear blind spots is very good so the greater angle of view afforded from the side exterior mirrors door panel location is a big help. I would also like to see the LCA feature from the Cayenne spread to the sports cars to help further with the blind spots.

The Christophorus Magazine #354 had a great article about and pictures of the 981. In it, head of the Boxster series at Porsche Hans-Jurgens Wohler made mention of the 981 doors in particular and the overall inspiration for the 981 design, the Carrera GT:
"Together with the engineers, I literally fought to get these doors made. ..... More important, we were able to realize dual air intakes. .... Before, the engine took air in on one side only, and on the other side it got cooling air. Now air comes in through both openings in front of the rear wheels. Having a lot of air means more power—and the voluminous sound it makes is great too."
The design of the doors and sides obviously play a significant role in the performance and personality of the 981 too.

Porsche spent approximately 18M Euro on the design of the new door. It's the first time the Boxster has had a unique door from the 911.
The door panels look the same between 991 and 981 but when I asked if they simply bolt on from one car to the other I was told that they are also unique to the 981.

This was my only gripe with the 991 when I first saw it. Aside from it looking simply tacked on with no purpose than to fill what would otherwise be a gap, the finish is not my favorite. I bet it would look better painted gloss black
