Default VW influence on Porsche?

I saw a 2013 Porsche Boxster on a Dealer's lot this morning, Len Stoler Porsche, and the car had Goodyear tires. I can't ever recall Porsche equipping any of their cars with Goodyear tires before. Cost cutting?

Some of the later Spyders also had Good Years on them although it wasn't common.

I'm not sure I would consider it cost cutting, high performance Good Years aren't really cheaper than Bridgestones or Pirelli's.

My 2012 Cayman R came with Goodyear F1 Asymmetric tires on it.

The Goodyear F1 is a decent tire - made in Germany, even. I prefer them to PS2s or anything Continental makes.

That's good to know. All of my Porsches came equipped with Michelins. I suppose Porsche was unable to get the best deal with them.

If you look at the cars (of the same model) sitting on a Porsche dealer's lot, you'll see Pirelli, Michelin, Continental and Goodyear - that I know of. I have no idea how Porsche decides which cars get which tires.
I'm pretty **** about tires and know what I'm looking for. With a new car, I expect that I'll be replacing tires before they wear out. I usually keep the factory-supplied tires just long enough to see how they work.

Porsche allows so much customization when ordering their cars, I'm surprised that tire brand choice isn't on the list of options. I've had nothing but great experiences with Michelins, so I'd stay with them if possible.

Steve did Porsche stop using Bridgestone? Mine has Bridgestone RE 050's which are ok but not great. I have already decided that the Super Sports will be their replacement unless something better comes along within the next 18 months.

I don't know, Afshin, but I haven't seen them on a car in more than a year.

We put the MPSS on my wife's 2000 Boxster S (after rebuilding the US-030 suspension and adding RSS LCAs) with 18" wheels. The MPSSs have great grip everywhere, but they are a little 'mushy' for both our tastes. Michelin really needs to do an N-spec or R-compound sidewall. It may be less of an (or none) issue with the lower profile 19s of a Spyder. Hopefully, the mushier sidewall isn't why the MPSS work as well as they do when it comes to their all situation/conditions grip.

My Spyder is one of the first 100 or so, and it came with Goodyears.

I have been quite pleased with them. Only 3,8XX miles on them so far, and it is a fair-weather car that has not seen the track, so can't say much about wear, wet grip, or how they behave at the limit - but they are quiet, and grip well in the dry during spirited canyon runs.

Surprised to hear that since I respect your opinion. I like PS2's (not the greatest, but)...

The Spyder I'll be getting was shod with Goodyears (....wait... or was it Bridgestones? Now I'm 2nd-guessing myself.. ). I was kind of worried until I read this thread.

Still, I plan to burn 'em up on DE's so I can switch to Super Sports. Maybe I should wait to get LCA's until AFTER switching to Super Sports?

my Spyder came with Goodyears but after 8000 miles were corded so I'm running a new set of Super Sports at Parade (great tire, my 5th set!)

and, by the way, both Wolfgang and Hans-Peter Porsche were at Parade this year, I'm told a very unusual happening along with 19-year old Ferdinand

Wolfgang was very explicit in what the future would hold for Porsche, post-VW merger, "not too worry"

Goodyears aren't a cost cutting measure. Some of the German made Goodyears offer very good performance. For years Goodyears were original equipment on older Ferraris, Aston Martins, and Lotus Esprits.

As for Porsche, I've seen almost every major brand on them. Years ago Porsche was putting Dunlops on their cars and that was when every tire Dunlop made was junk.

My Boxster RS60 came with Michelin Pilot Sports, and overall I like them a lot. But I've had other Michelins on MBs that I thought were overpriced and overrated. You can't simply go by a brand name, you have to consider the actual tire models and model of car that will be using them.

My Boxster RS60 came with Michelin Pilot Sports,

Yep, that's the tire that I have had on my Porsches for over ten years, and I just assumed that they were standard on Porsches but members of this forum were good enough to educate me. I just had a new set of Pilots added on my 987S yesterday.

Thanks, but I doubt I'm worthy... opinions are always personal.

I seem to fall in love with every other generation of Michelin, and find the intermediate generation ones to be (as Dino944 said), "overpriced and overrated".

I put the MPSCs (which I love) on the CR. That car came alive with more grip and a stiffer sidewall - but that 'forced' the LCAs on me, too.
