Default 981 S Engine

its makes 315hp vs 350 in the base 991?
what are the differences? Was there a powerkit/x-51 option on the previous gen Boxsters S'?

I would also be curious to know the differences since the same engine was used on the 987.2 S. Unfortunately didn't offer an X-51 kit for the 987, I bet it would have been EXTREMELY popular if they had.

I know I would have probably gone for it.

No 'Powerkit' on the 987, however the Spyder had 320hp and the Cayman R had 330hp from the same 3.4 motor.

Thank the purists and marketing department at Porsche - No way they are going to let the Boxster/Cayman step on the toes of the cash cow that is the 911. Base 911 will always be more powerful than top line 981.

so the new more, expensive boxster gets less power vs the previous gen RS and spyder? SO basically the boxster gets a detuned 911 engine. Thats so BS. As i recall the Boxster's chassis could easily handle another 100hp. Cant believe P is leaving money on the table buy not offering a powerkit. disappointing.

X-51 option for 996 cost $16,000 so I don't think it would have been too popular for boxsters.

My WAG is Porsche makes way more money selling more powerful/expensive cars than it would offering a power kit for the Boxster/Cayman models.

Different strokes for different folks but too much hp in the Boxster (or Cayman) would detract from the car.

For instance more power means more cooling is needed, thus more radiator, more hoses, lines, coolant. Higher speeds means larger (heavier) brakes.

To withstand the power a heavier drivetrain/suspension will be needed.

The car's chassis/tub would get heavier from more bracing.

The car would of course gain HP but gain weight and lose something in the process.

I have an 02 Boxster 2.7l car and while the thing is not as fast as my 03 Turbo, it is a pleasure to drive and in some cases feels 'quicker' than the Turbo.

The Turbo seems to take forever to shift while with the Boxster I can upshift very quickly and the let up in acceleration is very brief compared to the Turbo.

Also, the Boxster is lighter on its tires and easier to drive around town. And it ain't shabby out on the highway either.

Sure there are faster cars but none I say none as balanced as the Boxster.

Sincerely,

Macster.

981 gets a much more restrictive exhaust than a 991 and ECU tuning is likely to be different. Long blocks are the same between the 2 cars. Performance numbers for the new 981 S match the numbers of the 991 C2 Cab due to the much lower weight, so it makes it a lot harder this go around to spend the extra money on the 991 C2 Cab. No 981 ever had a factory powerkit and probably never will.
