I am looking at purchasing a 2015 S which has a non-bose system w/ phone bluetooth and front and rear parking sensors. I wanted to see what options I have to add CarPlay, possibly a backup camera and maybe even try and make the systems sound better while keeping the OEM look.
I assume having a non-bose system is ideal for this? I have seen different CarPlay options, but not sure what is available for a rear cam or even options to add better speakers.
You have a few options.
- Mr12volt seems to be a good way to update your current PCM unit to add CarPlay and cameras. Unlike may other's that use the current PCM units, it is supposed to have the best sound quality. I an not sure if the visual parking sensors work with this, but I know the audio does.
-Another option is to replace the HU with an Android unit. There is a huge thread on the 991 forums about that and the members on there created an install manual and will help with any troubles you may have. This is the way that I went. I got the CHSTEK unit and am very happy with it. The screen is large and I looks good in the car. Has anyone done a CarPlay retrofit / Headunit replacement for 991.1 - Rennlist - Porsche Discussion Forums
There are many threads on speakers. Not having the Bose makes it easier because they aren't 1-2 ohm speakers like the Bose are. When doing searches, look at the 991 site also because the systems are pretty much the same.
This is my CHSTEK unit. Reverse camera with parking sensor overlay.
Depending on how high-end you want to go, Musicar in Portland makes plug and play systems all the way to audiophile grade. This was my dream car, wanted it to be exactly what I have imagined in my dream car, so I went for it. Been extremely happy. And with the factory head unit, nothing for thieves to lust after.
as long as you have PCM and not CDR the Mr12Volt kit is going to be your best option for OEM look and feel. The addition of the equalizer aids to bringing about the best audio possible from your speakers. Beware others who convert fiber-optic audio to analog...

how can I tell if I have pcm? I haven’t purchased the car yet so trying to understand what options. I know the car has Bluetooth for phone, but not for audio. It’s a 2015.
It is probably best to upgrade the speakers and amp (perhaps also the headunit as well). In my PCM car I have swapped out the speakers (a mix of focal flax and audison, though it is probably best to get matching speakers - focal, dynaudio, audison stuff seems to be popular but there are many options) and added a carplay module to the stock headunit. I still have the stock amp but it has been a big improvement over the stock ASK speakers. When I get more time I will upgrade the amp as well, though I'm happy enough for now.
diymobileaudio.com as well as this site and other porsche forums have good threads on speaker swaps for the 981 - I would suggest swapping out the tweeters first for upgraded units as it actually makes a noticeable difference. I used focal tweeters from a focal set I bought but I believe many folks have gotten good results using Dayton ND-20FB
