Default Tires for HPDE

I have a set of 18" wheels from my 987 Cayman that I would like to use on my 981 Boxster for HPDEs. I was thinking a good size would be 245/40 for the front and 275/40 for the rear. There don't seem to be a lot of options, at least in stock currently, for this size. Does anyone have experience, good or bad, with any of the below tires?
  • Michelin Pilot Super Sport
  • Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02
  • Yokohama Advanced Apex V601
  • Pirelli P Zero PZ4 Sport

Wheels are 8Jx18 ET57 fronts and 9Jx18 ET43 rears.

I just saw this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/981-foru...up-change.html.

And a link to Apex recommendations here, https://support.apexraceparts.com/hc...-Fitment-Guide

I will start there.

If you intend to track more than 1 or 2 days and you intend to push the car beyond 70% of its capabilities, you won't get much life out of the tires listed. Good street tires, but the track will abuse these quickly.

Others will chime in with their preferred tire and I'm not up to speed with current availability of track-focused tires, but I always had great results with Bridgestone RE-71R when I was regularly tracking my car.

Probably just 1 or 2 a year.

The Apex fitment guide gives you a feel for what sizes do fit on your car, based of course, on Apex wheel specifications. This article from Grassroots Motorsports provides a good overview of the track capable tires that are available: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/ar...-buyers-guide/

Just got my first set of 18" Nankang AR1s mounted and hit the track this weekend. Can't wait! I have two buddies that swear by them, one in a 997 and another in a built Miata. Can't wait to see how they do. Whatever you buy, if heat cycling is available, do it. It will make them much more predictable first time out.

I run Hankook RS4s 245/40 and 275/40R18s for their durability. DE 4-6 times a year. On my second set. Third set on order however 275/40R18s on back order with Tire Rack.

Hmmm…275/40R18 isn’t listed as an available size for the RS4 on Hankook’s site.

The Tire Rack website is the same way. Can't order them on the website, but if you call they will place the order. I ordered front 245/40-R18s which are in stock. They will hold the order until the 275s show up. They sell out every year.

Austin, what sizes are your 18s that you can get those AR-1s on? The smallest I see are 295 and 305. And how did they do on the track?

The so called Hankook website sells less Hankook tire sizes than Tire Rack. My 275/40R18s are now delayed until June.
