Am I crazy? Considering spending just under $80k for a 2016 Cayman GTS.

but, yes...I needed a quick sale and liked the buyer so I gave him a good deal at $51K as I didn't want to miss out on the GBM 718 6MT that I had found at Porsche dealership in AZ

Definitely wait if you are fine with spending 80k on a 981GTS. For a point of reference, I bought mine late March 2022, only 3 months ago and it was 67k (really 68k because of their stupid mandatory nitrogen air tires, window tints, door guards etc) out of a Hyundai dealer.
92k MSRP with most of my preferred goodies. 15 BGTS Rhodium Silver with PDK.
-Alcantara interior with white stitching
-Carbon fiber interior
-14k miles
-2 owners w/ major services done
No PTV or X73 but those did not matter to me as I don't track the car. You just need to be patient and really stalk the nationwide listings and be ready to hop on a listing if it fits your criteria. Personally, after following the market for over half a year, I would not pay more than 75k for a manual GTS and 70k for a PDK. This is assuming the basic specs and not the holy grail 5k miles, PTV, x73, PCCB, 110K MSRP optioned car.
The market is softening and with all these cars sitting at 75-80k, you are bound to be able to save 10k by waiting a bit as someone else mentioned since the inventory is so high.
At 80k for a car with 20k miles and low options, you're limiting yourself since you're only a bit away from a GT4/Spyder. So to put it blunt answering your topic question - Yes, you are crazy with all due respect , i kid. But ofc that's just my philosophy.
Here are some pics of my newly acquired BGTS.

I wanted a BGTS and searched for a long time. I finally found one with low miles, 6MT for $74K. I was ready to pull the trigger when I found my current car, a 2014 BS, 6MT, SC, PSE, x73, 20” wheels, low miles for $59K became available. The car had a good history and looked like new, with the exception of the license plate holes in the front bumper that I need to get fixed. I just could not justify spending $15K more for what is just about the same car. I had been looking for a BS for about 7 months when I found the right one.
I’m sure you will know it’s the right one when you find it. I am willing to spend a little more if I am getting a good product. Like anything, you get what you pay for. I traveled out of state to look at my share of “this is the right car” only to find that they had an issue I could not overlook (delaminated headlights, water leaking behind dash, other damage). Keep in mind as these cars get older they will be harder and harder to find in good condition and low mileage. My point is, if you find the right car don’t be afraid to over spend a little since the next right car might not surface for a long time. I’m not sure $80K is only a little over for the car you described, but only you can make that final determination.
One last thing. A large part of the driving pleasure for me is the sound of the car. I just took my car on the Tail of the Dragon and the amazing sound of the PSE on this car only magnified the overall driving experience. The 981 has such an amazing sound I do not think any newer generation of BS will give me the same driving satisfaction that my current 981 does. Again, this is purely a personal opinion.
Happy shopping

Nice find, but I still find that it's a lot more money than it needs to be for a GTS. Well, if one has the money GTS is the way to go, however, if you are lucky you can get an S with almost similar options for less. Not exactly sure how many are out there, but I was able to score a near perfect condition 2014 S model with 23k miles with pretty much all the options the GTS has for $51k.
Last December I bought a 2015 Cayman GTS for $75K.
One owner, 18K miles, immaculate condition. Racing Yellow over leather interior (most alcantara replaced with leather).
Manual transmission!
PTV, Bose sound, 18-way seats, X73 sport suspension.
Purchased from Porsche of Silver Spring with certified pre-owned warranty.
Worth every dollar!!!

wouldn't worry about not having sports exhaust. You can add that later if wanted.

Three Wheelin'
There are "GTS lite" S models out there, but have gotten even more difficult to find. The GTS will have a few more HP, standard third radiator and alcantara. Back in 2019 I searched for a used GTS with deleted alcantara and ventilated seats. Found a loaded 2013 Boxster S PDK, PASM, PTV, SC, PSE. 18 ways and more. As mentioned we will start to see used GTS 4.0s soon which may or may not loosed up the 981 GTS market.

But say you can find a GTS 4.0 used at 100k, do you think its going to lower an 70k used GTS 981? That is the missing equation here - the answer is no.

Back in April I bought a '15 CGTS for $78.5k. $94kMSRP, 8,550 miles on the odometer. PDK. Car did not have its 40k mile service done yet.

Also frame of reference: this 2016 CGTS 6mt going for nearly 88k. They basically said they think it’s market price. So either these things are going up still or they’re dreaming. 80-82 seems to be the spot for low mileage manuals.

This site is very handy at seeing the current sale trends all in one place as it pulls in auction data from multiple sites. Its showing one GTS sold last month with 26K miles on it for 71k, but not sure on the spec details. There are others if you look at previous year models

I agree. The GT4s are everywhere it seems. There is a white one sitting right up the road from me on a dealer lot for sale, and tons of them on the site I linked and elsewhere. Its just a matter of how much one is willing to pay, but you can easily have one in a week. Very different than when they first came out in 2016.
